Need a new iMac

If you are selling the machine then it is best to completely erase the startup disk.

I think when I sold machines, I did both, but did an OS install for a friend who bought a Mac Mini 2009 from me.  Apple Help has a section for preparing a machine for sale.

OK. The point I was making is that it is unwise and unnecessary to deactivate anything until the other machine is set up with all important info transferred. I might have missed it but I didn't notice anything above about selling the old Mac. If or when she is selling, then logging out of everything is probably sensible in case the final step of erasing the disk doesn't get rid of everything. I think there are options for high security erasing as well though which should do that properly.

Good idea. I like lists.
Instructions were talking about multiple choices. Side by side hooked up, using WiFi, probably time machine but I don’t remember it. Also maybe iCloud backup.

I don’t know how to hook them together, or really any of it. But I can learn. (Maybe) I guess I could copy to my desktop HD, I have a couple of GB free. But not sure if that would take forever. And I’m not sure whether I copy just all of the files I’ve created or do I copy things like PS, LR, and any other software I have installed? I realize CC is not installed, it’s cloud based I guess. Yet I see connected PS files that looks like it’s installed. See what I mean? It’s all Greek to me.

I have Adobe’s CC (Creative Cloud).  You still need do download the programs that you use, be it PS, BR or LR, when you login.  It will ask you then to de-authorize the old one.  That was very easy.  You are allowed two machines with CC so I have running on my laptop as well.

Okay, folks, — here it is, what you all have been waiting for: The Edo Report on the new M1 MacBook Air! What? You haven't been waiting for this report? Hmm. Tasty tech details? Nah. Try YouTube. Just a bit of random stuff from me. But I may be the only regular in the forum who owns this new laptop, so read it anyway.

It's very fast. Uploading images to Alamy, the line goes across the image in a second or two. All those nightmare problems I was (and still am) having with Adobe CC editing on my 2017 Pro? None of it is happening on the M1 Air. I have a few smaller issues to work out and I hope to be able to do that myself. Mostly, this may be using Big Sur for the first time.

I'm not a gamer or a heavy pro user. In working with images, the Air, that has no internal fan, has remained cool, almost chilly to the touch. So it's fast and its cool. This machine cost £999 here in Liverpool. Apple gave me £310 on my 2019 Seville MacBook Air in trade. So my cost was £689. I can answer most of your tech questions right now: I don't know.

I’m so glad I have this thread to refer to when the computer comes. I think it might be a couple of weeks since I have the upgrades that probably makes mine unique, or at least not standard.
Using the Payboo credit card saved me more than the GPU upgrade cost, so that’s like a freebie.

As far as the new-to-come out iMac goes, the new styling, possibility of colors, who cares. It sits in my office out of sight to anyone but me. Chin, no chin. I like the chin because it gives me something to touch besides the screen when adjusting the angle. It’s how it works that counts.
I’ll be honest, though....a machine in a pretty color is appealing. As a watercolor painter, color is important to me.  It’s very important when I buy a car.  A color I like gives me peace and good vibes. But a colorful computer is only a whim and I need to put that childish whim behind me. The basic no-color doesn’t grate.

I will be selling my old iMac once the new is up and running with no problems. I imagine I’ll find some of my old software will no longer run on it.

I have to thank you all for the tremendous help and suggestions. Especially you, Mick, who in spite of my bull-headedness (I call it walking my own path 😂) on certain subjects in the past, have hung in and continued to be helpful. Knowledge shared willingly is a wonderful thing.

Like Ed, I would imagine this will be my last computer.  My chassis is wearing out. My engine is running irregularly. And now my fuel tank is faulty and on fire.  I’m taking it in to a specialist Tuesday to find out if it can be helped. At least the computer running the whole thing is still sharp, just not technical.

No problem Betty. I'm happy to help and it is nice to be appreciated 😀. The fact that you actually heed my advice (in most cases) is heartening as it doesn't feel like I am wasting my time. You have a lot more in the upstairs department than you give yourself credit for I am sure. Setting up the new machine should be easy and I am happy to help if you need it. Best of luck with the fuel tank. I can only imagine what that means? There must be a country song that covers that one.

I think these new coloured iMacs that are rumoured are intended for the consumer end of the market, give it a bit of a springtime kick. We will have to wait and see but it seems like it will be a while before they bring out machines designed for graphics like the one you are getting.

Something that was seen on the CT scan, where my stomach (fuel tank) meets the intestine. Going to a gastroenterologist. Hope they say it is only a simple duodenal ulcer. In the past it was always peptic ulcers. After this past year, we all should have ulcers. 😊 Funny thing, I’ve never considered myself a worrier. But I do react emotionally to things, always hidden. Cool exterior. Guess I should scream and kick something once in awhile. Get it OUT! I was told I’ll probably be scoped.

Oh my gosh. Scoped!  The last time I was scoped (three ulcers) the meds they gave me, Versaid, loosened my inhibitions. As the doctor and nurse roused me, I mumbled, “what did you find?” The doctor said, “Three ulcers.”

Aa-n-d I said, “”wee-ll, s**t!” They laughed but I was humiliated.

Then when I had cataract surgery, same med. I heard them talking about my football team. I said, “Actually, even though he got hurt, we’ve got another good running back to plug in.”

Dead quiet. Doctor’s hands froze. Then the nurse giggled. Then I was out like a light. Dang. Just when the conversation got interesting.

I did have a quick look on the Apple website to see the different colours - wow I wouldn't know which colour to choose if it were me 😁 Maybe it's as you say to give the market a springtime kick.  Iphones now come in all sorts of colours, I'm still on the iPhone 8 which has a white top and bottom on the front.  I find it's easier for me to grab if it's in my bag as it makes it more visible.  I can't even remember what colour the back of it is as it's had the same case on it since I've had it, probably silver or grey - I think I'm a creature of habit.  What colour did Betty go for ?

Betty has bought an Intel Mac so silver/grey I guess. I'm not actually seeing what you are seeing though. Perhaps one of us is time travelling. Everything is still silver here although my iPhone SE is one of those with the red back and sides. Like you, I got it for so as I could find it more easily.

Yes, Carol, I’ve ordered the mid 2020 iMac with a Intel chip. The 27” one (or larger) won’t debut until late this year. The 24” one was announced today.

The new design of the iMacs are of no interest to me. Such as getting rid of the chin. That’s where I grab mine to change the tilt, so I prefer the chin to leaving fingerprints on the screen or having to be ultra-careful touching the sides only, or the back...where I’d be touching ports.

I’ve properly beefed it up (thanks in part to MDM’s suggestions), so it ought to be very speedy. What I like about it is that I can beef up the RAM. I’ve ordered two 16GB of RAM and will be inserting them myself. I can’t do that with the M1 or M1X chip. Any upgrade has to be ordered at time of purchase, and Apple will charge through the nose for it. Plus at this time, we don’t know if over 16GB RAM will be an option on the 27” at time of order.

I actually feel more comfortable because the M chips are pretty new, and there aren’t years of use behind them. Intel has been around forever, and they are time-tested.

As far as my iPhone...I put cases on mine that have my artwork on them. It doesn’t matter what color is underneath, it will be covered up. The one on my iPhone 12 is from one of my watercolor & ink.

It is exciting about the colors of the computers. I would have gone for that, probably, if there had been an option for it with the one I’ve ordered, unless it was much extra cost.
Below is the cover I had for my iPhone 6s. After that, I had iPhone 8, now 12.

I had a sunflower with a tiny insect on it on my iPhone 5.

And my last cover on the 8 was of geraniums taken in my yard and done with an artistic treatment.

Wonderful phone cases Betty!

Thanks, Michael. Artwork is where my heart is, what's most stimulating, where my true pleasure is. Not saying I can’t get that from stock, but it’s only occasionally I get “that” shot that thrills me. Like Ed’s shot he won the challenge with. Those don’t come along often. I don’t know that I ever have to that level.

Recently, I got a shot of a granddaughter. But it was with my cell phone!! She was standing by a sliding glass door, and the way the sun lit up her blonde hair and face was incredible. A toddler, who was being active so you could see through her body stance the unending energy and motion. The whole family ooohed and had to have a copy. When those split seconds happen, one is lucky if one captures it.

The geranium phone case? I have the full image (not phone cropped) framed and on my bedroom wall.

This one, selective color with grain added to the sky, is also framed.

Heads up Betty. I went in close on the image above and, just to let you know, I can see blue edging between the big rock and the water to the left of the base of the tree.

You can’t see it in the print on my wall, Allan. I guess nobody puts their nose up close! 😁

Yes but!  I was on FAA when I went in close using their close inspection mode for buyers. If I could see the "fault" then other potential buyers can and may well be put off buying a copy of the image.

Allan

If it was my image, and a nice image it is too, I would try to put it right.

Yeh! A fun look for me too but I won't be buying one. I am not keen on the idea of having everything on one integrated chip. No upgrades are possible as far as I can see.

fiddling round the back to plug in a USB drive doesn't sound too attractive. And you'd scratch that lovely finish.

Hopefully a 2021 iMac compatible version of this will emerge pretty quickly.

I got one for my iMac and it solves the problem very nicely, although it's a shame the problem is there in the first place. Apple often prioritise aesthetics above ergonomics.

That’s where I am, too, Allan. That's why I’m getting the mid-2020 Intel iMac. It comes with 8GB RAM but I’ve ordered two 16 GB to insert in it. I’ll hang onto the 8s but not use them. I’ve read mixing doesn’t give the best performance. The reason for hanging onto them? It’s said if you need to send the machine in under warranty, they’ll request the original RAM. I think I’ll be more than happy with 32 GB.

Can you imagine what it would cost to replace the integrated chip if something were to go wrong?
