Motor racing archive 1960s

Recommended Posts

Bill de Selincourt motor racing archive.

https://www.geographyphotos.com/portfolio/G0000f17So5U49dw

The ones towards the end haven't been done as yet - mainly because I'm not sure how to caption.

Have no knowledge of motor sports so would greatly appreciate any help checking existing captions and suggestions for new ones.

Hope that you find something of interest.

Interesting set.

Ian, the bottom two appear color balanced. Some of the others are very purple. Could you not use the Gray dropper on those tracks/road?

Not sure which 'bottom two'.

Yes, I can probably improve them in terms of colour balance.

Thanks for the feedback.

👍 Thanks for taking constructive criticism in the good way I meant it. One I mentioned as bottom two was D0A5163.CR2.

You could try both for some: color corrected and with this very sixties slide feel.

It is a great collection. I would certainly tell - or link to - some stories about him in the additional info.

And maybe something about some of the cars as well, like auction sums fetched, if you can find it.

That is a RAW file. That is just the way it has come to me. I haven't corrected anything.

It just depends on the slides. Some are borderline usable some are just right. Very often you try fixing one thing and something else gets worse.

Yes,  Wim that is exactly the same car as in some of the photos.

"It was sold to Bill de Selincourt for 1961 ......

"From de Selincourt – for whom 'NBL 660' was prepared by (the two Johns) Coundley and Pearson"

I've also had interest and sold some to a USA archive of a collection of one of the John Coundley cars.

Thanks for the prompt Betty. I have done quite a few, might do some more later, but think I have done most that needed it.

Hopefully it looks a bit better now. Good of you to take the time to have a look and comment.

The ones with the black frames are RAWS that I haven't done.

Indeed, I covered the pre-sale with several shots: Image ID: R5436G

Maybe the new owners will pop in and buy a couple of PU licences from us? 😄

Does this look like Brands Hatch? Does it have hills in the background like this?

I think it is:

Sir Richard Fitzwilliam, Fitzwilliam Racing Team, Elva 100 racing car, thought to be Brands Hatch June 1959

With that bungalow/cottage?

The paddock behind the stands on Paddock Hill Bend is certainly high on a hill looking down, so it could well be. Looks very different now of course.

Thanks Avpics and Spacecadet. I have now established that this is Brands Hatch in October 1959. Apologies for not coming back.

The white car in this picture https://www.geographyphotos.com/portfolio/G0000f17So5U49dw/I0000enqxJu1jBNE is a Lotus Elan. The problem is that although 1962 is the first model year production actually didn't start until 1963 according to https://lotuselan.net/wiki/Lotus_Elan. That leads me to believe that the picture is from 1963 or even 1964 since they must still have been very scarce in 1963. By January 1964 they had reached chassis number 330 and some of those would still not have been shipped and would have been prototypes, show models etc. Of course, this being Lotus, these figures are only somewhat reliable. 😉

Also, no mention of 1962 Lotus 19 races by John Coundley here:
https://www.racingsportscars.com/driver/results/John-Coundley-GB.html

But some from 1963 and 1964. In 1962 he seems to be driving Lister.

I wonder what he was doing in Brazil though as all mentions of his races are European...

Thanks Lars,

Here's the race list:

Here's the caption that I have:

Bill de Selincourt, Lotus Climax car 36 Goodwood Whitsun Sports race 3 June 1963, car 14 is Mark Konig, Lotus Elan, England, UK

Hmm... nice list of cars. No less than 3 examples of what is now the most expensive car in the world. Anyway, unless it is printed somewhere on that list I doubt that it is from 1962 or Brazil.

🙂

I would guess UK 1963 - but it is just a guess. 🙂

... although M. Parkes did drive his own 250 GTO in 1962 there is this mention of a 1963 race:

May 11th 1963, International Trophy, Silverstone, Chassis number 3729GT. and same car again August 24th 1963 at Tourist Trophy, Goodwood.
http://www.barchetta.cc/english/all.ferraris/Detail/3729GT.250GTO.htm

That seems to check all the boxes...
