Circumstances make me a city shooter now--no waves, no birds, no crocs, no fish, not much of any rural subjects.

And you have a hell of a flair for it.

Culling is definitely the toughest for me. I've been trying to shoot fewer frames of the same scene, and have been successful to some extent, but digital is so different than film and so I've been shooting way too many frames for years. The potential to "fix" an image in Photoshop also means I have way too many old images on various hard drives. I'm getting better at shooting yes and deleting more, but being indecisive makes the culling part agony.

I love the rest though. Research for keywords and captions can lead to reading all kinds of unrelated but interesting facts and that takes more time than it should but I've learned so much doing this. And travel, shooting, that's why I got into this, best job in the world.

Despite all the processing, keywording, etc. that we have to do now, some things were even more tedious in pre-digital days. For instance, I spent hours typing and sticking labels on slides. I eventually discovered a handy little program called Cradoc Caption Writer that made creating labels fairly easy, but they still had to be attached to each slide individually. Also, my noisy -- it sounded a bit like a buzz saw -- dot matrix printer used to regularly go out of alignment, and I'd have to start printing labels all over again. Perhaps there really is such a thing as progress. 😁

Oh yes, me too! I used the Cradoc software as well and the noisy dot matrix printer.  A good friend of mine created a competitive program called Power Software for captioning and I started using that.  He kept giving me free versions as long as I helped him find the bugs in the program.  I got pretty good at that system...but a lot less information on a slide mount then what we can add to our photos today!

Oh yes, I remember that. I used to pay my young son 1 Pound per 20 slides sleeve to stick labels on each slide. He usually got bored after one sleeve.

That's pretty good pay. Nice work if you can get it, especially these days. ☺️

P.S. I still have a ton of plastic sleeves if you'd like some.

Yes, that was probably the most frustrating part. There was never enough room on the labels. I used to sometimes stick another label on the back with additional info, but the stock agency that I sent my slides to didn't like that. I believe that Cradoc is still available in one form or another.

Ottawa was my “home” town for 27 years Winterlude, Rideau Canal Skating and Christmas lights on the hill and a great opportunity with beavertails a low calorie treat!

Don't remind me... I was meant to spend Christmas in Canada with my daughter and family, we would have gone to Winterlude! I tasted beavertails the last time we visited in winter... low calorie 😂

As for Ed's question:

I love the shooting part and will photograph anything, hate the culling and keep way too many, like the research and wish I was better at keywording! Gen's system sounds fantastic!

I had to look up beavertails. Sounds like they taste a bit like churros. I grew up in San Diego so some of the Mexican snacks and candies are familiar to me. I kind of miss cactus candy. It's rather juicy as well as sweet.

We had to cancel two trips earlier this year and our “escaping” the Canadian winter to Portugal is gone too, sorry to hear about your cancelled family trip to Canada.

Beavertails are quite the success started in Ottawa and now even available in Disney parks. They are a sweet fluffy pancake available with lots of sweet different toppings, like a sweet pizza? Our Grandchildren love them. You Cactus candy sounds inviting we have never had any. Churros are big in Portugal too.

i'm mainly meatless (will eat fish, cheese and eggs), but problem seems to more deep rooted, so cutting off all potential aggressors for a month and then slowly reintroduce after to try and identify culprits.  but hey this 2020, so par for the course at this point....

Tony Stone just required contributors to write the basic subject on the (St. Patrick's Cathedral, NYC) and our copyrights stamp.

The specialist library that I submitted to was quite picky about how they wanted slides identified and captioned. They liked me to cram as much info as I could on the labels. I used to generate two labels, one with my copyright info, image ID no., plus a title, and the second label with a short caption. Somehow I managed to get it all on there. With images that I kept for my own use, I would just use a copyright stamp and a label with basic info.

Be careful if you go back to meat-eating. You have to do it gradually. Apparently, the body has to restart the production of enzymes needed to digest meat. I've been mostly vegetarian (I eat some fish and other seafood) for decades, and I imagine that I'd get quite sick if I sat down and ate a thick steak, which is unlikely because I'm happy with my diet and my health is good (low cholesterol, good blood sugar, etc.). But I digress as usual... 🙄

true.  Even though like you i didn't eat meat as my choice, one rule i set when hitting the road full time was to i always accept offers, so a few times that meant eating it, and the first couple times after 7 years off it was quite a shock on the system....

(in typical forum happening, we have totally gone off track)

On most subjects, I don't snap many frames. I've never considered culling an issue.

To give you an example Edo of what I just shot and my future culling nightmare.

I am camped at the seaside, the tide is ebbing, sand bars are appearing, someone is silhouetted catching pippies and carrying a bucket, pelicans are hanging around. I am trying to get the perfect combination of all actors: 5 shots. There will be only 1 keeper.

A pair of dolphins appeared, interacting with each other, coming to me and looking at me. Some close-up shots, some including the mangrove habitat in the background: 147 shots. Keepers? A handful.

The scenic fish and chips restaurant with a terrace above water in the marina has a sky background of ever changing interesting cloud formations complementing its painted blue colour: a series of shots, including/excluding yachts, palmtrees, clouds.

As the tide keeps ebbing, a family arrives with a bright inflatable boat for the kids. Dog/kids, I'm on duty for incorporating people in my portfolio. Endless combinations. Plus pelicans and a very scenic background of forest and mangrove along a sandy beach.

You get my drift. And we haven't got to sunset yet. Sand patterns with evening light, sky, clouds, silhouettes, possibilities are endless.

Just this past hour of shooting will take me a long time to edit from beginning to end. And it's not the keywords that will be a problem, it's all covered in my templates.

All of those shots could be news pics, but culling, a quick edit, headlines and captions would have to be done as quickly as possible.  As a press photographer I’ve learnt to only take a handful of pics so I’ve less to go through when selecting which to send.  Do news!
