Galway, Ireland?

It's like I said right at the start of this topic - Galway is a major university city so lots of transient student accommodation, as in shared housing, and it is also a major tourist destination with festival after festival in the summer - fun city - so really expensive for anyone wanting to move there permanently and get their own apartment. With the motorway system in place now, the commuter radius, particularly  to the east and south has also expanded massively which means high prices out of town as well. I am guessing Edo doesn't want to live in a town. A car is almost essential in most rural areas in Ireland which rules that out. It's a difficult one.

 

But be glad you are not in Sevilla this week Edo. The temps in mainland Europe at the moment are breaking records in the heatwave. In Sevilla it will be hitting 40 later in the week.

It's sad and unfortunate, but Galway has not worked out. And Ireland has not worked out. I’ll be going to Liverpool in July. 

 

The rental situation here is impossible. Should I be trying Cork or Kerry? No. Also too expensive. There was nothing even to consider in Sligo and Sligo is not a place to be if you want to shoot stock pictures. Someone asked me if I liked Galway. I like it. I liked Dumbo, San Miguel, Montreal, and Seville too. But that question borders on the irrelevant. I'm looking for a place to live, something I can afford. There's nothing like that in Ireland. 

 

After a frustrating morning at rental offices and getting 2 rejections online, I came back to my hotel and on the TV was one of the Irish news channels showing a debate in the Irish Parliament about . . . the out of control cost of renting and buying living space in Ireland. Just in this last year or two, prices have gone through the roof. 

 

At the recommended Sherry Fitzgerald agency, they had no one bedrooms and the few places they had were 1,600 euros a month and up.

 

But I have three problems: there's almost nothing available. What there is is far too expensive. And as one friendly agent told me today, they are very picky about who they rent to. He was talking about ageism. 

 

Do I want to go to Liverpool? No. But for every 10 flats that are up for rental there, they only have one person trying to rent. What do I do if Liverpool fails? I don't know. But Ireland, like everywhere before it, has failed. In Brexit England as an Irish citizen, I can live and get free healthcare. At least until the nation falls apart. I lived in Oxfordshire in the '80s, so I speak the language.

When landing at Liverpool you will, of course, be following in the footsteps of many Irish immigrants over the centuries. Liverpool is a vibrant place, cosmopolitan (like so many other ports), but suffering from years of economic decline and lack of investment. The city is one of the cheapest places in UK to live. Your stint in Oxfordshire won’t have prepared you for the Liverpudlian accent, which is strong, distinctive and - to some ears - impenetrable. The Scousers’ reputation for humour is probably deserved. You won’t be bored!

Sorry to hear that living in Ireland isn't going to work out. Liverpool sounds like a good option. It has been a hard day's night for you so far, to quote some famous Liverpudlians. I guess the biggest concern is what might happen to your healthcare options in England after Brexit.

I don't have a crystal ball to see how Brexit is going to turn out but the Irish-UK relationship has been around long before the EU.

 

Am I looking forward to Liverpool? Not even a little bit. The only thing I am sure about is that most of the buskers will be doing Beatles songs.

Nothing.

Edo, healthcare entitlement in the UK is by residence. An irish citizen is considered settled on arrival, but a long-term rental won't hurt.. Register with a GP as soon as you have a flat.

Skibbereen is in West Cork, about a 20 minute drive from me and even closer to the other Andy (aphperspective).  Skibb is great - good bus links, shops a-plenty, stuff to shoot and it's where my girlfriend has her café!

I certainly do, Edo, but if I were living in Skibbereen, I could pretty much do without one.

I don't think it is just hospital treatment Edo. I think anyone resident legally in the UK is entitled to register with a GP and receive free appointments (and prescriptions for over 60s). The NHS is probably the last great remaining state insitution from post-war socialist Britain and it is struggling for survival due to massive funding cuts.

 

If you do go to Liverpool Edo, you will be following in the footsteps of another member of the Rooney clan. In fact young Wayne is in the news today. I know you said you don't like soccer but this one is worth a look.
