What kinds of images could be sell on Alamy?

Is the exact date relevant? Maybe it is as I know nothing about football. But the date of the photo is already captured in the optional information. I presume that’s searchable. So maybe just the year or at most the month and year are useful in a caption. Willing to stand corrected.

Dates can be very relevant in football - at all levels.  Football teams generally play in more than one competition - usually a league for their standard and a number of knock out cup competitions which may or may not involve the teams in their league.  Probably the best demonstration right now would be to google "Liverpool v Wolves" - the teams played each other in the league on 22nd December (Liverpool victory) and will play each other again on Monday in the FA cup - so that is less than 3 weeks between matches involving the same teams but in different competitions.
You get similar occurrences even at a local level - there will be leagues and cup competitions so teams may face each other more than once in a short space of time with league matches earning points and cup matches being knock out.  Dates can be vitally important here.

As someone who grew up in Wolverhampton and therefore a lifelong Wolves supporter, I'm hoping that the result will be reversed on Monday :-)

You can search for exact dates... I'm not sure how many people really do it though but if you look in 'All of Alamy' in the measures, you will find some specific searches and also searches where they specify a month (but maybe not day or year). I would think that something like the Wolves v Liverpool match would only be pictured by someone accredited and then it would be uploaded as Live News.. and when uploading as Live News, Alamy are very prescriptive about the format of the caption and therefore you would have to adhere to their date format at time of upload.

It is possible for ordinary non-affiliated photographers to get accredited to the premier league - although not many bother as it is a lot of hoops to jump through.  You have to carry a minimum amount of public liability insurance (£5 million per claim I believe but it could have gone up) and have made a certain number of paid sales to publications of football images the previous season (30 national press images for premiership15 for Championship and league one and two).  Its all done through a company called Dataco - and there are plenty of stories out there about it.

That's interesting to know! I'm curious.. is the 30 (or 15) paid sales to publications not a bit of a chicken and egg type of situation? (i.e. you need the accreditation to take the photos to sell but you have to have taken and sold the photos before you can get the accreditation)?

Yes, I'm not understanding that. Dataco are the agency who specify those requirements which are that number of published images from non-league games before they'll consider you for the higher level games.

It can be like that - although there are workarounds.  There is a specific media company focuses on "non-league football" (which is still in leagues and the top tiers are named national leagues just to confuse non-football people) which counts as national, and licencing for the top non-league tiers is not too bad.   If you concentrate on cup matches with lower teams meeting the championship or premiership teams you will get stuff regular nationals will use - just make sure you get paid as images published without payment don't count.    What doesn't work is going as a team photographer - because any pictures published as a team photographer are not counted.
Like many areas of specialism, it is its own little world - one I have had to start learning.  I have absolutely no intention of going that high - too much stress and costs.  However, I am not averse to being with a club who may meet bigger opponents in cup competitions in a couple of years.  I do get to see a division 2 side in pre-season friendlies as well.  In the meantime, I enjoy being pitchside, seeing some excellent football, in a set up where the fans from both teams mingle freely and change watching position as they wish.

I think Dataco would be happy if freelancers would do one and they could just licence club photographers and press photographers both done through their parent employers.  They cannot be seen to "ban" freelancers and independents but they can make it difficult for them.  The assumption is that the employers of photographers will have assessed their employees for basic ability and knowledge in the area they are shooting and so they know what to do and what not to do so Dataco don't have to worry about messes to clear up.
