No bicycle sales for me this month - might need to shoot some when I'm in Amsterdam next Saturday ...

But then, it's not over until the fat lady sings ...

There will plenty of those next Saturday.

I find it interesting that the this advice about covering diverse subjects seems to be exactly the opposite of what I heard in the 80's and 90's. Back then, most stock photo gurus advised becoming an expert on a particular subject. Times certainly have changed...

I know with a microstock site I tried years ago they talked about finding something there were no other pictures of and focus on that - well I found something put up several pictures and got do diddly zip in the way of views yet alone sales.  Meanwhile my oil film on water of which there are thousands of similar images sold quite well - I mean being micro stock it was for very little but the same thing went multiple times

On Alamy, it's no use being a specialist, because of the diversity algorithm, unless you have little competition. Otherwise you can be top of the search with one image, but have several on the last page.

There are presumably some niches which would do well, with little competition and 'enough' buyer interest, but I've found the (very few) subjects I have submitted with little/no competition have no buyer interest (too obscure, no doubt).

I also try to have a variety of images, though having some favourite topics.  I notice however that when alamy promotes featured photographers in their blog, their portfolios tend to be relatively small and with quite similar images (style and/or content).

Interesting observation. Perhaps more focused photographers make "better" pictures.

Just speculating...

My July sales include:

Aerial view of rainforest

Birds x2

Ants

Flower

Tree

Koala

Sculpture in town

Seascape

Sign

Heritage railway station

Small village in Hampshire x4

Locations: Australia, UK, Panama

I only do RM.

So lots of variety.

It is interesting, particuarly when their own system discourages specialism. I'd think specialists should be better at photographing their main interest.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Who knows. I’ll just keep on keepin’ on the way I’m doing. At least it’s not boring.

Update. 3 more sales came in today...guess I’d call that a surge! In fact, this is clearly my BME.

12 sales for July

6 RM

2RF editorial

4 RF

one of these is an A that had to be mouldering deep into the search...maybe it was the fact that I’d turned it into RF.

two were Bs. Also RF that once were RM. The sales are somewhat low value, (not way low) but so are most of the RMs this month.

I believe I’m seeing a trend, finally. If you remember in a previous thread, I said it would take a while for me to know if changing some to RF would pay off. All of these are first-time sales for the particular images.

Considering the ratio of RM to RF in my port, the RFs are selling a bit better. I’ll leave the math to others. You can see the numbers at the beginning of this thread.

Thank you Alamy, for making me consider your suggestions. I’ve always been pretty much a die-hard RM contributor. But this old dog can learn new tricks.

Betty

Correction

Numbers now 13 sales

5 RF

2 RF editorial

6 RM

Every sale flowing in today are RF

Cool thread Betty!  I learned a lot reading all the post!  Thanks for posting the topic!

I have a question, and probably should have started a thread, but when I look at your all's images when I read the post, does this count on Alamy measures as a buyer viewing your images?  In other words when I view your photo stream is it counting or does Alamy search know that I am a contributor and does not count the view?

I like to look at the photos from the contributors in the forum, but don't want to distort the Alamy measures results.  I learn from the photos as well.  The RF - RM thing is something I am researching, Alamy recommends the default be RF, so I am in a quandary, although you can change if you remember to do so :D.

You can set the defaults for your images to whatever you want by clicking on the settings symbol (a wheel) on top right of AIM. AFAIK contributor searches don’t count and don’t distort things so search all you want.

Alamy knows.

Contributor views don't count.

Thanks, Keith. I’ve had a read through. Very informative, whether stock or Live News. I’ve thought about live news, but not being UK based, (who’s interested in Wichita, Kansas?) I have wondered if it were worth my time. I’ve just now copied the info on Headline and caption, but need to figure out what app to use to do all of that on my iPhone. I need to search old threads, because I know that information is there.

Congratulations. Do you notice any pattern to the types of images that are licensing as RF Editorial? How do the RF Editorial prices compare to similar RM sales (if you don't mind my curiosity)?

Half of my sales are of fashion shows, the rest are varied subjects from my collection of images. So variety yes.

John, I wish I could say. The two RF-editorial images weren’t good money sales. Not the lowest ever. Yet they were similar value to several RM sales this month.

What I can say, these two images are of a baby girl. They have sat there for 4 years without even being zoomed while they were RM.

I only recently, in the past couple of months, changed them to RF editorial. That may be a coincidence, but my gut says changing them made the sales.

I'm now sitting on 14 sales for July. The last was a RM, ( I think a PU according to the price) so that makes 7-7. Yet my RFs are 1/3 or less of my port.

This is my best month ever, when the usual is 5-7 sales. Pretty close to my 1 sale per thousand.

Thanks. I'm going experiment with brushing the cobwebs of more old images and changing them to RF Editorial to see if it brings any of them out of retirement.

Me too. For the moment I'm working hard to build numbers, and for the most part it seems to work. Two bad months this year, but hopefully they'll be blips.

Reported in July so far:

Aviation: 4

UK royalty: 2

London buildings: 2

Motorsport: 1

Other sport: 3

National security: 1

Transport: 2

Get a decent mix of subjects and not just older, less well-developed but newer brighter ones.  It takes awhile for things to happen. It’s been at least a year since I started converting, but have done a lot more in the last 3-6 months. Remember, I have over 1700 RF to get the results I’m getting. I’m pretty much listing all of my newly uploaded flora as RF.
