Dyn Llun
Never bothered with Instagram before, not because I don't recognise its value when used seriously, just a matter of time. Too busy keeping up with print sales, updating website and blog, plus travel and making new work etc. However, the galleries that sell my work hinted that it may help to have another platform on which some things can get 'out there' so I have just started to upload from my iMac, a selection of black and white documentary work of the kind that sells through the galleries as original silver prints. Plus I am just beginning to upload some of my more 'vintage' work. I dont monetize my photography anymore though so thats not my aim anyway. Thanks I wanted at least one confirmation of that. To me it is similar to Flickr, and I do have the vain side too so I keep that account alive, but really this whole I've liked or faved your photo now fave mine, or I am following you so follow me, well you know... I am sure some who fave my image/s might not even like them, and I might find it very difficult to like anything in some ports too but now one is somehow obliged to fave or follow back. The only thing I have 'gained' from having images on there is that a few have been lifted and used here and there. A couple of tour operators have used the safari images on their sites, and that's okay, I knew what I was doing when I posted them. Didn't think they were very saleable and in fact I haven't sold any on Alamy so far; there are many, very many safari images that are just better out there. To now open an instagram account would just be (for me a waste of time). I agree there can be a fun side to it, like when you've got some images that you're especially excited about and really want to show and share. Why I haven't closed the Flickr account. Not completely inflexible and easily swayed by opinion so I might reconsider in the future if I think there is a benefit, for just an ordinary stock photographer. MariaJ
Is there a way to post anything but square images on instagram? No matter how I crop or resize my image, it always gets cropped to a square when it goes online.

I assume you are using the app so when you go to the upload screen and choose your image, there is an icon in the lower left showing two diagonal arrows which you use to resize your image.

It will resize shots in landscape format. However portrait ones it will crop but to 5x4 format rather than square. That's my experience anyway.

Dyn Llun
I do understand that most folks upload from their phone which limits image adjustment to a certain extent. I have been uploading some 'vintage' and newer stuff from my iMac, so to retain the correct proportions of the various format sizes I use and for portrait or landscape orientation, I add white canvas around the image to make a white square frame. Probably been noted before by others. Pete Davis http://www.pete-davis-photography.com http://www.peteslandscape.blogspot.com http://www.instagram.com/petedavisphoto Pete - you need to start adding hashtags to your pictures or nobody will ever see them except for people who are following you. Uploading without tags is a bit like hanging your images on your wall at home - nobody except visitors will ever see them. Using hashtags is like putting your images in a public gallery. Adding a hashtag means that the image will show up under that hashtag and people who are following tags will then see your your pictures. For example you could use the following tags for many of your pictures: #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotography #monochrome #streetphotography Then people who are following these tags will see your images and maybe start liking them and following you. These are very common and popular tags so you could add some more specific ones as well but there is no point in adding tags that don't already exist. Given the type of photography you are uploading and your long history as a photographer, I would suggest you add captions that tell the stories of the images which would add a lot of value and interest. Note that you need to add the tags as part of the captions at the time of uploading or they will not appear under those hashtags as far as I know. So there is no point in doing it retrospectively.
davidhu
Sound advice Michael. Pete, you might want to follow (and tag) some of the black and white photography hubs - that way you have a chance of a shot being selected as pic of the day which will drive traffic to your page. Incidentally you can add hashtags after you have posted your image - Instagram added this in a later update. Either edit the original caption (the three dots at the top of the image) or, and I find this easier, just add them as a new comment.
Dyn Llun
Thanks guys. I will, it's just been a tad frantic the last few days here but I'm grateful for your comments and advice. I tried it a little while after I started (just over a year ago) and it didn't work - I could add the hashtag but it didn't appear on the tagged page. Must try it again. Shepard
Here is my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/keithgoat/ I only recently started it. I began uploading work from my Canon, but now I'm trying to only upload shots from my iPhone, and leave my DSLR work for here or in a separate portfolio (like SmugMug, zenfolio, etc.). Cheers!
