  1. I have 64 in the hand picked "Creative"....... but no e-aai

    It gets curiouser and curiouser.

I haven't received any email but have 18 images categorised as creative!

    Clearly nobody loves them.

    dov

    Yeah, same here.

I have 64 hand picked ones in creative, not sure of how many on individual keyword searches, but don't seem to have received the email. The volume of Creative shots doesn't seem to have increased since the last re-rank and since then I have added a load of other shots that could be considered (uploaded since then)..... and are selling at other RM agencies as commercial. I think they need to refresh / check a little more often otherwise their competitors get first dabs  :D

  2. Wait until your internal HD starts shown signs of failing, then open up the iMac and replace the disk drive with an SSD. That will be in about five years or so…

The replacement SSD has completely revived my 2006 vintage 20-inch iMac. I may never buy that coveted 27-inch…sigh...

    Dave

Spooky.... the hard drive of my 2007 imac gave up in 2012!!

The SSD in the macbook air is really impressive so I would imagine the imac would be really responsive with one. They seem to be coming down in price a little more now..... by the time my Mid 2011 model needs a refresh they will probably be quite affordable!!!

  3. I use the Visible Dust range of sensor cleaners including the wet clean pads and anti static brushes. Never a problem after many years of use. A few drops on the pads, wipe one each way and usually all clean. Currently using a Canon 5D MK11.

Yeah, i use the Visible Dust Arctic Butterfly..... I use that first and hen the swab with Eclipse cleaner. I've had the arctic butterfly for a few years now and it is excellent.

  4.

Mobile Phone - Probably less likely to think they would be be to sell their images, after all, it's just a mobile phone!

That is, until Facebook works out that you've got a mobile phone and starts showering you with ads to "make money selling photos from your mobile".

    Alan

Grrrrrrr Facebook...... we'll pull the plug on them now before they do  :P

There will of course be plenty of shots to take that can't be taken with an iPhone..... and, always the distinct likelihood that fashion moves on and mobile image style fades away. It equally may not..... I must consult the crystal ball!!

  5.

The RAM from Crucial is not just about being less expensive than Apple RAM, although it obviously is. It's worth remembering it's also guaranteed for life. I sent some RAM back to Crucial about a year ago that had been in the MacPro for a few years and two sticks failed. They replaced them in an instant.

The thing about the 27 inch screen size is true. But in my case I am currently sitting in front of an Apple Cinema Display at 30 inches, so 27 inch will seem quite small in comparison. I will be selling the 30 inch in the future I expect.

The iMac thing is more about having it all in one now these things have become much more powerful. Incidentally, the new forthcoming MacPro, which is not very big at all looks crazy powerful but I can't afford one of those and would probably never use it anywhere near to it's full potential.

I have the iMac in its box in front of me and I guess I'm going to have to open and check right now in case there is another issue.

Another 1+ for Crucial memory. I've upgraded all of my iMacs in the past with their memory and it has been top notch, both in terms of performance and their customer service. In fact, I now I could replace two 2mb blocks with 8's..... I may run their app on it to make sure..... could give it an extra boost!!

  6. There is also the mindset of the person contributing. If they only do it for beer money..... just maybe...... hopefully  :)

DSLR - I've got this camera and I might as well see if I can make money from it.

Mobile Phone - Probably less likely to think they would be be to sell their images, after all, it's just a mobile phone!

It's also very true to say the variety of shots (style) will be limited by a mobile phone and, while simple shots are in fashion today, it doesn't mean they will be in a couple of years time!

  7. I decided to go for it...... updated the laptop (2012 Macbook Air) first so I could still use the iMac if things went pear shaped!!

So far, no issues. I've been able to open files in CS6 without any issues and Capture One Pro 7 works as well. The update carries out a check before opening for the first time and tells you if you have an app that won't work. I had one, Little Snitch, but there was an update for that and that also works now.

I haven't used LR for a while, only have LR4 but that also opens / works without any issues. Last thing to check will be if the Wacom Intuos 4 tablet will work or not.... or if there is an update.

Edit.... So far it's working very well. There seems to be a performance improvement, noticeably quicker at opening up apps and browsing etc. Can't believe it's a free update as well!!! Nice one Apple

  8. iMac 24in for me. Very happy with it.

I'll be upgrading fairly soon... to a new iMac... :)

1+ Moved from Pc to Mac in 2008 and never looked back. Onto my 2nd, the first is still used as a 2nd / backup to a 2012 version bought the end of last year. Running mountain Lion on both without any issues and use Capture 1 Pro 7 with PS and used to use LR5.

I over have C1 and PS open at the same time along with Dreamweaver and Fireworks when working on my website etc..... never had any issues.

Edit..... I added plenty of memory to each mac after it was bought.... used Crucial who provide a useful app to determine what memory you need and what you can expand up to etc.

  9. Christine, I can't help with a "suitable bridge camera" as I think they are all of the minescule sensor type with extra long zoom range lens fitted.

These factors combined will generally give a poor IQ and certainly not good enough for Alamy.

I found lately that my Canon kit was becoming too heavy to carry around, as well as being too obvious, so I sold it all on and have equiped myself with the Fuji X-E1 plus 18-55 lens and the 55-200 lens. I'm waiting for the 10-24 lens to arrive to add to the kit. All of this Fuji kit weighs a lot less than the Canon kit I was carrying around.

Fuji also produce a 60mm macro lens for this camera too (90mm equuiv).

Of course just after getting the X-E1 Fuji anounced the X-E2. Ho-Hum! I think that will be my second body to add to the kit but will wait for the reveiws first then decide.

    Allan

The 60mm is an incredible lens as well, wouldn't be without it!

  10. I had read that and forgot about that. Sure don't want to have to buy and carry a blimp around to photograph quiet events.

    Thx!

    L

No problem.... at the same time, it might not be that bad, it all depends how they recorded it (mic to close to the camera) but from initial listening...... it sounds a little like an AK47 going off  :D  Could just see the people running for cover in the theater

  11. I think Canon and Nikon would probably be wise to create a small mirrorless with a viewfinder. So many photogs, pro and active amateurs have jumped ship in the past year for M 4/3 and smaller systems but really lusting for full frame.

In the spring I was shooting APS-C side by side with full frame Sony RX1, Fuji X-Pro 1 alongside the Canon 6D. I also have a Canon 60D and just don't think it looks that good after iso 400 even with prime or L series lenses.

The Sony RX,when focus was right on stole the show. The Fuji did better in some instances than the Canon and for a long shooting day,the smaller cameras won out.

I'd be interested in this system if it looks like I will be photographing less action type images.I don't do sports, but do concerts every now and then. I used the X Pro 1 over the summer for an outdoor show and focus was not that easy on singers that did a lot of fast dancing. I would alternate between the screen and the viewfinder. Maybe the new XE2 would fare better? I don't know if I will be keeping the XPro1. I like it but just do not love it and I can't even articulate why.

Check out ww.sonyalpharumors.com regards to shutter noise if you thinking about using it in a theater or somewhere where noise maybe an issue. I seen one of the guys there was quite worried about the level of noise the shutter makes (being asked to leave for disturbing punters).... there are a few videos with recordings if you need to check it out first. 12. I suspect most of you will go for the new zoom . . . zoom junkies that you are.   :)

I own the 24, and it has two great advantages over the zoom: it focuses down to 6.5" and it's a few stops faster. In the perfect world, where money would not be a consideration, where I might have a Ferrari garaged near the Autobanden for the occasional weekend in Germany (Where else could you wind that thing up?) . . . I would own both.

It would have to be a really good zoom. It was the Nex system that really got me into primes and while I have 2 zooms, I always go to the primes if I need the best optical quality. Of course..... I'm a little stuck when it comes to 200mm options so a zoom it is on those occasions  :)

Favourite primes.... 14mm 35 & 60. I'm likely to add a 23mm and that is purely down to the fact that I enjoyed the focal length of that 24mm Zeiss lens when I had my Nex.

"This isn't something to do to be successful in business anymore.  Those days are long gone...it's something to do to pass the time."

    no

    its a business

    km

    +1

Like all businesses now... (and i mean ALL), it's more work for less returns but if you target your work correctly, look at whats selling, the return is there.....

That said... I'm happy if you all want to throw in the towel ;-)

Hell yeah.... it's all doom, everyone might as well give up now  ;)  :P

  14.

For every image you have both on here and MS, your potential customers will always research the cheapest price. That may end up being the microstock site.

Possible but probably not very likely.  One reason is that Alamy really serves a different market, even if there is some overlap on the images used.  Secondly, MS is not necessarily a cheap option for buying a single image as it's a volume model based around purchases of image packs and, where single image purchase is an option, the prices would be comparable.

True. You also have to factor in that not all sales are .35 cents. Today, I've made 2 $28 dollar sales at Shutterstock.... $56 sales here. This month they have matched what Alamy has given me (net income) and Micro as a whole significantly more. I have two ports, one RM and one Micro. I don't sell high valued shots via Micro, not worth it. I only have 500 images in Micro now while Alamy has over 4000.

At the moment, Alamy sits in third place behind Corbis and Micros. There is a little overlap but I don't just place a copy of all images with all Agencies. Place the right image in the right shop window.

    Today is the day!

    New Sony Full frame cameras!

Anyone going to buy into the first batch they release?

After oil spots on my Nikon D7000s and D600s in the past few years,I will never buy early again. But I really really want this camera.I think. :-)

It looks very interesting but.... one of the main reasons for going mirrorless was to cut down in weight. The 24-70 f/4 is 680grams! while the 17-40L for the canon was 476g and the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is 510grams. Sort eats into the weight saving of the camera a little. The cost of lenses is also quite high, $1200 for an f/4 zoom? ouch.

It would probably be worthwhile holding back to see the timeline of lens production / release to see what else will be on offer and when. That said, the camera itself looks very nice and if you have a host of M glass and shoot manual, this would be a good investment I think.

You are correct, sir. It was weight and bulk that drove us into the arms of mirrorless cameras. I remember a phrase coined during the buildup of troops in Vietnam: mission creep. This might be "pocketable-camera-weight-size creep."

I won't be moving from my NEX-6 and NEX-7 to full frame. And I won't be moving away from primes into zooms either. The Sony zooms are either kit quality or too big and too heavy. When does this trend stop? It's exactly like the "progress" that made our DSLRs into huge, unmanageable monsters.

Very true. What's more concerning is the rumour that they are doing away with the "Nex" brand. No Nex 6 or 7 replacement. Will they change into the a3000 style?!?!  If this turns out to be true then it could be damaging in terms of pro buy in. If you invest into expensive lenses you want to know that you won't be left high and dry when Sony gets bored of it and changes it for something else. I really hope it's wrong because it is a good design concept and only needs lens development to beef it up.

Other snippets I've seen...the A7 doesn't have the new microlens design that the A7r has. This could potentially lead to problems with colour casting on wide angle lenses... some early testers have confirmed 21mm Biogon does indeed show some vignetting and color shifting on corners. So if you are thinking of getting one of the new cameras, it may be worth while going for the A7r or waiting around to see in depth reviews...... if you want to use M glass that is.

I'm in the UK so the extra charge won't apply to me - but I think Alamy ought to offer the choice of free payment for $175 or if you opt for the $100 then there might be an extra charge.

I don't know why we can't be paid any outstanding cleared funds at the end of each month in any case.

    John.

Exactly, I'm not going to be affected by this but I still feel it's wrong to charge people (on top of the 50% commission) to take out what is theirs.

Personally, I would rather be able to set my own payout level. Quite often I'm happy for it to stay where it is.

  18. So far this is my 2nd best month this year..... last month though was a non starter. zooms are holding up well but spread out more across all my pseudonyms rather than focused on one.... same with sales. The last re-rank that occurred also seemed to add about 50 extra images into the creative section. Hoping this will increase as i have been adding a fair few images that may fall into that category.

What I would like to see is a little more consistency, less of the peaks and troughs but I guess that will take time given the majority of my port is 6-12months old.
