  1. Looking back, only seven photos shot in the winter have sold, and out of that, two probably had nothing to do with the weather.
  2. Are you referring to noise or grain? If it's noise maybe you need to clean your cable connections or replace the cables. What kind of film are you scanning?

  4. Rather funny that they think their group is private but anyone can read it. I guess you have to be a trusted thief to post.
  5. Not all iMacs have user upgradable RAM. Better to check before you order.
  6. One way to save money is to buy one of Apple's Refurbished computers. They're usually 15% to 20% off the usual price and come with the same one year warranty. The only downside is that you can't order it with extra RAM but they usually offer several configurations, including SSD drives and varying amounts of RAM. Just scroll down to the bottom of the main Apple page to see what they currently have to offer. Check back often because their stock of refurbished items can change several times a week.
  7. Oh I should add, upgrading the drive in an old iMac isn't easy. Most older models have a little door in the bottom to upgrade ram, but the drive is behind the display. You'll have to remove the screen with a pair of large suction cups. You might prefer to have that done by an Apple Authorized Repair shop.
  8. A new computer is always better than one that's 7 years old. At that age, you'll be lucky to get two more years out of it. By the time you do the upgrades, you'll be about half way to the cost of a new iMac. I think you'll need to upgrade the system to Yosemite, at least, and I would recommend 16gb ram to run PhotoShop and Lightroom. Or you could get older versions of both which may run better on an older Mac.
  9. Was it actually that much? I never had to buy the full version because I just upgraded from PhotoShop LE.
  10. If you're new to Photoshop it's definitely better to pay $10/month for a subscription than $600 for the full retail version, plus $150 for the standalone version Lightroom. My problem is, I still remember when PhotoShop LE was included free with most scanners and digital cameras. Back then you could upgrade to the full version for $150 to $200 and I usually only upgraded every few years. Back then, it took several versions to work out the bugs and newer versions usually included more than support for new cameras or speed improvements. When I upgraded to CS6 it was only months before Adobe came out with their subscription so it didn't make sense, for me, to pay additional money for software I had already purchased. Unfortunately switching to the subscription version is probably inevitable, but for now, I'd prefer to avoid that as long as I can.
  11. It's odd that Alamy hasn't made any sort of announcement to contributors. In past years Alamy posted about a slower QC over the holidays so maybe there's a skeleton staff working anti-social hours. I once had a sale drop in on New Year's Eve so apparently clients still want to license photos over the holidays.
  12. I noticed some images in the Live News feed dated January 18th 2018 but they seem to have been fixed now.
  13. Despite your warning I still occasionally walk through Little Italy, and I see you were in Washington Square for a little Weiwei. Can we agree the Soho Apple Store is neutral territory?
  14. I just purchased the Upgrade from Lightroom 5.7 to Lightroom 6, from Adobe last night. First I installed the 6.0 version and then I downloaded the free upgrade from 6.0 to 6.14 from within Lightroom using "Update" under the "Help" menu. It said it would have to update my catalog which took a few minutes but everything seems fine now. There's a Support Forum on the Adobe site that may have the answer to whatever went wrong. https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html?promoid=RGJ8NLP8&mv=other#/top_products
  15. He did clean the port but I guess he didn't clean it well enough. Apple asked me to rate my experience so I responded accordingly. I've kept it in a case since the day I got it but the case doesn't cover he port. It's never been exposed to harsh conditions and, aside from some finger grease on the glass, it's in nearly pristine condition. No. Apple is no longer the company it used to be. I'm ready to go back to 1998 when we all had flip phones, net neutrality wasn't an issue, and Adobe software had perpetual licenses. In the meantime, I'll probably upgrade Lightroom tonight while the standalone version is still available.
  16. Oops! I forgot to mention that my son and his girlfriend also came across a Red Tailed Hawk munching on something, on their walk through Central Park. I couldn't tell from the photo if it was Pale Male, there are other hawks who nest near the San Remo, but it was a nice surprise along the way. I agree, other than Christmastime, May is a great time to visit New York. By then we're usually past the last snow and before the City gets really hot.
  17. Not to stray too far from the original topic but, I'm so frustrated with my last Genius Bar appointment that I'm almost ready to switch to Android. The other morning my 2 year old 6s wouldn't charge so I brought it to the Soho Store where they diagnosed it as a corroded Lightning port. I was told the part wasn't replaceable and since I don't have AppleCare, I could either swap it for the same model, for $300, or see what my carrier had to offer. I was just about to plunk down almost $800 on a new phone when I decided to Google it. Right there on the Apple Support Forums was a thread about how to clean the dust bunnies from the port! Apparently it's a common problem that happens around the two year mark. So I cleaned it several times again and it's been charging normally ever since. It seems like Apple is really pushing to sell new phones. fD
  18. A friend of mine pointed out that if you're shooting jpgs on an iPhone then it really doesn't matter. I still haven't figured how to shoot in Apple Raw but I probably should upgrade anyway.
  19. Maybe sometime, in the dead of winter when I have nothing better to do, I'll pop in a new drive and see if that helps. Thanks!
  20. My son recently returned to New York for a long weekend so he gave his girlfriend the tour. They started off at the Met and made their way down Fifth Avenue to Rockefeller Center for the Christmas Tree, passing through Central Park, the Plaza and the Apple Store, Christmas Windows, St Patrick's Cathedral, Grand Central Station, etc, etc, etc Then they rode the subway for some shopping in Chinatown and a bite to eat at Katz's Deli. Then they rode the subway again back to Brooklyn where they had another bite to eat and see the Christmas lights along Court Street. Somehow they managed to squeeze in a ride on the Staten Island Ferry and a game of pool. They have far more energy that I do.
  21. I see the upgrade includes profiles for iPhone 8 and iPhone X. Does anyone know if Lightroom 5.7 supports newer iPhones? I was just about to buy a new iPhone yesterday and it never occurred to me that I might need to upgrade Lightroom too.
  22. I don't think it was the internal hard drive since I was able to run numerous tests, format the drive, and restore from Time Machine without any errors. What was odd was that I couldn't do a clean install from my USB flash drive or the Apple server. There were also display issues which could've indicated a problem with either the logic board or video card. Whatever it was, it reached the point where it no longer made sense to waste time on a computer when I could be out shooting.
