  1. I've been a lacto-vegetarian for a long, long time (>35 years) for ethical as well as health reasons but I don't go that far in terms of animal products. I doubt that pigs or whatever animal were used were actually killed for their gelatine - it's presumably just a by-product so ethically alright to use in my book. I avoid eating it of course - I just threw out my last 10 rolls of Velvia which I found in a cupboard forgotten - I had to forego the temptation to make a Velvia sandwich.
  2. I got the same email and have decided to remove unnecessary restrictions on most of the images I had restricted. I found a quick way of removing all of the restrictions on a batch of images if that is what is required. Use the restriction filter, then drag the images to the batch box at the bottom of the screen, click on the restrictions tab to bring up the restrictions dialog as descibed above. Now the slightly different bit: click the restrictions option box and save. This gets rid of all the restrictions on that batch. This may be obvious in any case but maybe it will help somebody.

Like you I like to work my images a bit in Photoshop (although I don't use smart objects) - mostly simple stuff like spotting and local contrast variations with adjustment layers.   5. I think people need to quantify the degree of capture sharpening as Geoff has done before saying it is alright. This phrase has entered the literature in the last few years but without numbers has no meaning. In actual fact, the Alamy guidelines say no sharpening at any stage including in-camera - notwithstanding the fact that this can't be turned off in some cameras for JPEGS.   6. I'm aftaid I can't do you a comparison but I use the 24mm 2.8 AFD on a D800 and it is very very good if not pefect. I've also got an older 24 mm 2.8 AIS lens which is virtually identical. There is slight softness towards the edges in comparison to the centre noticeable at 100% on screen but not noticeable on even a moderate downsampling to say 6000 pixels. When I compare my images at 100% from the 24 to those taken with a 50mm 1.4AFD, there is a noticable sharpness difference on the edges but that is to be expected. The 50mm is just about perfect edge to edge except for the extreme corners. Y
  7. I had the same as you and decided to try it by similar logic but found that there was nothing in CC that I would use that I didn't already have in CS6. I cancelled the subscription the following day. Because I had converted my catalogue to Lightroom 5, I decided I would get the LR5 upgrade (£57) although I honestly cannot much benefit from that either.   8. As far as I remember you can copy and paste the summary of items sold web page including thumbnails into an Excel spreadsheet. I can't test it right now as I did a clean install with Mavericks and have not reinstalled Excel yet but I'm pretty sure it works. My preferred solution to this though is to use Lightroom and embed keyword phrases such as Alamy Submitted, Alamy Sold etc. Much easier in the long run.   10. If I remember rightly back to about 2004 or so, XP2 (or could have been XP1 but the same idea), works with Nikon's ICE so there is a lot less spotting to do from scans. And, as stated, it's developed in a colour lab. The few times I used it, I had it done in the local Snappy Snaps with a set of small prints so I could see what I was intending to scan.

  12. I'm pretty sure NYCat is correct. You can't use the menu commands (in Safari and Firefox at least) on any MacOS that I've tried (currently on Mavericks) but I only use the keyboard shortcuts anyway so I never noticed the menus not working. But the solution is simple and much faster - command-c and command-v keyboard shortcuts should work. If this is the problem, once you get used to keyboard shortcuts, you shouldn't worry too much about menu commands.
  13. IE has improved no end since the days of IE6 and before and IE11 really can't be compared in any way to older versions. It's a while since I've done any web development, but historically there have been security issues around use of text editors in browsers. Generally, when restrictions have been there, it's been with the intention of protecting the end user. I'm sure it has changed. It was probably at its worst around IE4 and maybe 5 when they had all sorts of stuff in VBScript and extensions that would only work in IE etc, which led to a lot of confusion for developers and users al

That would be correct if the images on the left are SOOC, but if Jill has darkened them/reduced exposure as a result of her editing on the TV screen then it might be that the originals SOOC might be closer to "correct" exposure.   17. I've never used smart objects. Perhaps I'm missing something by not doing so - I came to an early conclusion when they were introduced that smart objects would not be too useful in my workflow. If I want to sharpen an image for printing I will just create a copy. I'm generally happy with alpha channels and curves adjustment layers for local adjustments in my images - I don't do any text, artwork or 3D in my images.   18. I decided I would try the offer after reading this thread but I have to say I was pretty disappointed. I already have CS6 and Lightroom 4. For my purposes, there is not a lot in CC that was not in CS6. The ACR filter is interesting but it would be much better as an adjustment layer than a filter for non-destructive editing. As it is, if you want to apply ACR to a non-raw file, you can just do it non-destructively in Lightroom or ACR - adds a few seconds to the task but the advantage of it being non-permanent would outweigh the inconvenience.   19. I think it may be a lot better to use internet chat than phone if needing to contact Adobe Customer Service. I had to contact them recently when I messed up my login details after I changed my password following the hacking debacle. I got in conversation with somebody (in India I think) very quickly and that was on a weekday evening when the USA would have been fully awake. They sorted the problem straight away as well. I did actually try that, but I just got an error message saying I wasn't authorised to use the system, or something like that - which was the same problem I had when tryin

  22. Ed: I tried bringing down the contrast but it started to look flat. So this could simply be a personal preference. Again, it would have been nice to redo in the original RAW file. This really is a matter of taste. I like the strong colours. It's probably a consequence simply of increasing the contrast.
  23. I would love to redo these in ACR, but as mentioned before I lost all the original RAWs, and it is my preferred PP tool. Going to work a bit in Lightroom to see if I like using it. Also, ideally, a few of these need some masking I think. The train wheels especially.   24. It's not so much that you are blowing out the highlights in the images on the right - it's that there is no black in them - you've opened up the shadows way too much. As others have said, calibrate your monitor first. Then, learn to use the histogram in Lightroom or ACR. There are some very useful additional visual aids to determining whether you are in the right area with shadows and highlights in ACR/Lightroom - the little triangles at the top of the histogram box and the option key on your keyboard as you move the sliders are your friends - give them a try.
