  1. The other three names are all fairly near each other, south east of Brienzersee, so it's likely to be in that area. The only similar names I can find are Schwarzhorn and Schreckhorn. Alan
  2. Oh yes! I once went on a trip all round Europe with a camera I'd just bought secondhand. When I got home I found that everything was underexposed by a couple of stops. This was in the days of film when there was no RAW file to ride to the rescue. Alan
  3. This one, Wycoller Barn in Lancashire, is around 1650 but it's reckoned it used timber from an earlier cruck barn. Alan
  4. Early morning on the Oxford Canal Narrowboat on the Rochdale Canal Restaurant boat "Tattershall Castle" on the Thames Alan
  5. Back in 1985 I did a business mailshot and signed 1200 letters in quick succession. It fried my brain and since then I've faltered every time over my signature and it's never the same twice. So far I haven't been done for fraud - fingers crossed. Alan
  6. I think historic transport will never cease to enthuse people. Classic cars, steam trains, vintage aircraft - each new generation will be fascinated by them. Alan
  7. Yes, but those of us who eschew fast food ( rather than chew it 🙂) can easily tell the difference and can obtain good quality food anywhere and everywhere. It looks as though the same will not be true of AI. Alan
  8. I've made a number of YouTube videos with a 5D2. I guess the 5D is not dissimilar? As Steve says, don't film long takes. Shooting in HD the 5D2 has a maximum of 12 mins per take before it stops filming. Also if I do a sustained period of filming without breaks between takes the camera overheats and shuts down. As long as you take heed of this it's a great camera for filming. I use Cyberlink PowerDirector for editing. I've always found it more user-friendly and better suited to the work I do than Adobe Premiere. Get yourself a good external microphone and recorder. You don't have to pay a fortune for one that's perfectly adequate for vlogging and it's vastly better than the onboard mic in the camera. I've got more sound gear than I need because I made a feature film, but for vlogging something like my Tascam DR40 recorder would be ideal. It has built-in stereo mics but you can also plug in a cheap lapel mic for really good voice recording. Alan
  9. I've thought about it on a number of occasions but haven't actually done it yet. Alan
  10. Thanks Mark, I'm sure that everything you've said will be useful when I get down to the next batch. Alan
  11. Ah right, so you don't use the slide-in holder at all, you just slot the mount over the posts on top of the frame? And I get bored very easily with repetitive tasks (which is why it can take me weeks to caption a submission of 50 images), and I also have a million and one other things going on in my life, so a day's work for you will probably be spread over months for me. Alan
  12. I'm not triggering the flash directly from the 5D2 because I understood that there's a risk of damaging the camera. So what I did was set the shutter speed to 1 sec and use the switch on the Illumitran to fire the flash. I didn't want to risk ambient light getting in during that second. I did get out an old 35mm camera to fire the flash but it seemed to be unreliable. However, I found it difficult to get reliable exposure because my slides are of varying density, which meant that I was constantly taking multiple shots of each one, changing the aperture each time (manually because I'm using an old Canon FD 50mm macro, thus with the risk of disturbing the lens focus), or in extreme cases adding more or fewer ND filters under the diffuser screen. So I switched to just using the tungsten focus light on the unit instead. That seems to work well, though I still haven't got the exposure quite right - still working on that. I did think of making something to hold the slide firm. I cut out a piece of plastic with a hole the size of a slide but I'm finding that when inserting into the scanner the slide can slip under it. So I'm planning to glue a second piece of plastic with a slightly smaller hole underneath the first. I don't want to go to an enormous amount of trouble for just 450 scans. Alan
  13. My New Year resolution is to Illumitran all my 6x6 slides, which is what I bought the thing for nearly 9 years ago. I started a day early yesterday! I've got 450 of them so assuming I regularly lose the will to live after laboriously taking each one out of its plastic wallet, cleaning it, carefully positioning it in the holder, switching off the room light and taking the photo, I should get it done by the end of 2024. Alan
