I just looked closer to the new graph on the My Alamy page and see that in 2012 and 2013 my average sale price was around $60, but this year it is around $90. That is good news. I'm not in the news-paper deal or Novel Use and have only a few distributors. I sell fewer than 100 images a year on Alamy, so is this only some fluke?

Yes, if you don't have those loose-change sales plans, prices may be up some . . . but gross income is the more important number. Remember we get a smaller percentage now from Alamy. So we have to ask ourselves: am I making more money?

Looking at the first 8 months of 2013 and comparing them to the first 8months of 2014,

2013: number of licences: 307; gross income: $14,890; average gross per licence: $48.50

2014: no. of licences : 289 (  :( ), but gross income: $15282; average gross/licence: $52.87

So average may be slightly up but probably not significantly....

My average price per image this year is $80 compared to $74 last year (not in newspaper scheme or NU), but I would attribute this slight rise to fewer distributor sales and more Alamy sales in 2014 rather than to prices being up. Images prices don't seem to be dropping any further, though, which is good news.

I suspect that those of you who travel do it on your own dime and do not deduct that figure from your gross income. Am I wrong?  B)

Yes. I deduct it from my net income... ;)

That said. All travel plans have more or less been shelved for the time being due to the unsustainabilty thereof.

I'm in the same boat, and the boat has to stay moored to the dock these days, which is a shame because travel-related photos are my best sellers.

In the long term my prices are down, but a bit all over the place in the past few years. I did a list dating back to 2006:

2006 ...  $109 per sale

2007 ...  $193 per sale

2008 ...  $134 per sale

2009 ...  $113 per sale

2010 ...  $  90 per sale

2011 ...  $  86 per sale

2012 ...  $  58 per sale

2013 ...  $  71 per sale

I haven't done the math, but I imagine that my pattern since I started submitting in 2007 would be similar. "All over the place" sums it up well.

Wow! 2007 was a very good year for you.

Or perhaps you only made one sale...

More than one.

But one was pretty good. So good it was on the Wall of Fame at the Alamy office.

It's the background of this poster; video package; website etc etc:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pu-239_%28film%29

At one point it was on all the bus shelters in DC, just when I was not there of course.

On a small (not statistically significant) sample mine have halved since 2009, between 2002 and 2008 I averaged $100 or mostly better, it dipped to the 80s in 2009/10 and to $40-65 since. There has been a slight tick up this year over last but still lower than 2012, but that is all well within normal variability. I am more concerned to see numbers increase again then I think earnings will follow.

2012 ...  $35 per sale

2013 ...  $41 per sale

2014 ...  $51 per sale

In Novel Use and Newspaper Scheme, but those sales not included in above figures.

Similar pattern for me too (downwards).

A factor to consider........ many more images now are licenced for web/electronic use (lower $) rather than print (higher $ generally), so hence lower average pricing.

Good prices still out there for tightly edited RM work elsewhere (creative commercial/editorial collections).

True. However I suspect many, many more pictures are being used (and paid for) then even 10 years ago.

So, averaging out what's been posted so far ...

2006 - $141  (n=3)

2007 - $273  (n=4)

2008 - $131  (n=5)

2009 - $99    (n=5)

2010 - $83    (n=5)

2011 - $62    (n=5)

2012 - $56    (n=5)

2013 - $58    (n=5)

Still not a very big sample to be going on, but appears to be a distinct drop in selling value around 2008/2010 (2007 was skewed by two large figures of $475 and $320)
