Is it only me?

I disliked the old image manager and tried not to upload more than ten images at a time, because 'managing' them was such a chore.

But now, it seems to be so much worse, so I'm only uploading four or six at a time.

The first few times I tried it, it wasn't too bad, but in the past few days:

1. It takes ages to select supertags, as I seem to have to click on the exact centre of the star of a tag: even using a Wacom stylus/tablet, I miss far too often. It must be a tiny pixel array which is live.

2. Sometimes when I'm trying to select a supertag, other tags jump together and join inexplicably.

3. I just entered some tags, added some more and when I clicked enter, the second lot of tags appeared, but the earlier, more important ones, had disappeared.

    3b. It seems if I have copied and pasted a keyword it automatically 'jumps' it out of the input box, which is a PITA if I want to edit it. Also it jumps any which I already had in the box, then any others disappear.

4. I can't get and apostrophe to 'stick' in a keyword, whether I type it in directly or copy and paste. This is affecting quite a few of my recent files made in France (essential place names).

    4b Typing Alt+0233 doesn't seem to give me an e-acute. So I needed a brand name "marché 2000", and after failing to get the é several times, I cut and pasted marché, but then it 'jumped' and I hadn't managed to get the 2000 onto it. So I needed to make a text file, copy      marché 2000, then copy and paste that into the keyword box.

 

I know that all I 'need' is 5 tags to be able to sell, but I want to 'manage my images' as best as I can, which is usually over five, but fewer than 50, keywords.

 

They said the new image manager would be better, but it's really much, much worse.

 

Or it is only me?

If it's only me, what am I doing wrong? I just spent over ten minutes trying to get keywords onto one file, they just keep jumping, merging and disappearing, and again they have all gone except the five I entered after the one I'd copied and pasted.

If it's not only me, c'mon, Alamy. Life's too short.

Good Grief, I'd slit my throat if that happened to me.

I keyword in Bridge and have zero problems. But I often end up thinking of a tag or phrase to add and type them in. Nothing jumps out of the box when I do. I can edit the tag, then hit the tiny cross to add.

My apostrophes are removed upon upload, but I've searched the tag or phrase with and without the apostrophe, and my image is found in the same place.

My tags don't join unless I join them deliberately.

No problem selecting supertags.

I am using a Mac or iPad, and Chrome.

I'm loving the image manager.

 

I think I need to put you in my prayers.

Make sure you only have one image selected. But better, have the metadata on the images before you submit--like Betty said.

I agree with you that the new IM is no better than the previous one and in a lot of respects it's worse. However it seems your problems are stemming from the use of the tablet. Maybe it's not best suited to Alamy's IM? I really don't know how Alamy could have made such a hash of the new IM, it's very amateurish!

Yes, that's another thing, you have to deselect the first image you managed before going onto the second one. I've been caught out with that one too!

 

I tend not to keyword in Bridge, mainly because my main subject is wildlife, and Bridge really, really doesn't work for wildlife.

However, these particular files aren't wildlife, so I guess I could bite the bullet. I'd rather have a system where I could just type the words in, the tree system seems good, but takes far too long.

 

Oh, just remembered, I can do that in PS File>Info. Just need to get into the habit or remembering to do it.

 

So no-one else has a problem hitting the exact centre of the stars to make a supertag? Is it only Firefox/win? I didn't have this problem before this recent set I'm uploading.

 

There are much better systems than even the old image manager!

I just worked on a batch and I didn't have any problems. I don't use a tablet though.

What I noticed is that if I merge two tags that would make it an already existing phrase, then it deletes one of them. Fair enough.

 

I also just tried to type 'marché' (Alt + 130) and it worked no problem. I have lots of accents in my name, it's a real bore!!

I am puzzled by this statement. Why does it not work for you?

I do a lot of wildlife and keyword everything in Bridge prior to upload. I wouldn't dream not to do so.

 

The way I do it is I use a hierarchy I built over time with common names / Latin names, so it's there for next time I shoot the same subject.

Then I use a set of templates for various situations:

 

Bird: Bird, Birds, 1, One, Single, Wild, Fauna, Nature, Nobody

Flying: In flight, flying, open wings, outstretched wings, flapping wings

Feeding: Eating, Feeding, food, with food in beak (or with prey for spiders)

Insect: Insect, Insects, close-up, closeup, detail, details, macro, vertical

etc, etc,

 

I have built these templates after lots of research in AoA which is a treasure trove to identify search words used for wildlife.

I only have to append a few templates, keywording is a breeze.

Specifically to gvalee: It's like all these dropdown menus for countries when you live in e.g. the UK or US, it would take less time to type in the word than to scroll down.

Once you have a few hundred species, the tree system is far too cumbersome.

 

I'm going to need to embed the photoshop File > Info into my brain for workflow.

Right now I am working on 5 images and for some reason the right pane where you put in all the info is way down the screen.  At first I thought it was missing, but no, I had to scroll down to find it, so the images and the fields aren't showing at the same time.  Probably just a glitch that will be gone, but irritating.

 

I too do most of my keywording in Bridge (these particular ones I forgot to) so only have to select Supertags.  Don't have any issues with the mouse selecting tags.

I have a looooooong list of species, possibly thousands, accumulated over years of shooting wildlife and insects worldwide, which makes it even longer.

For easier use, I have created folders: one for birds, one for insects, one for mammals.

 

But I appreciate that what works for me might not work for someone else. There isn't only one way of working and we have to choose what we feel more comfortable with.

You can use File->Info in Bridge and type your keywords there.  You can select several images at once and do File->Info and that way you can add keywords to several images at once.

I have templates set up in Bridge. If I shoot an American Robin, for instance, I go to Tools>apply template and scroll to the one I need. The title you put in makes them be listed alphabetically, so it's easy enough.

 

When I set them up, it was a matter of keywording the image, then while it was still selected, going to Tools>Create Template.

Once there, my title is inputted "American Robin, Turdis migratorus" (may not be spelled right, that's why I have templates).

 

Like Gen, I have all the common keywords that apply to any American Robin image. I remove the ones that are specific only to that image. All of my personal details I put in while keywording the image is there, including copyright info.

Then I save the template.

When I apply it to a new image, I add the specific info to that image. Eating,feeding,eating an earthworm,earthworm,etc. or perched,perching,perch,tree,branch, etc.

My scientific names are in the templates and that's worth a lot not to make spelling mistakes or have to look them up again.

 

I began making templates early on because of wildlife and plants, because these are the types of images that can be repetitive.
