Just how good (or bad) is the Sony 35mm f2.8 za

Recommended Posts

I've been reading mixed reviews about the Sony 35mm f2.8 za

Although I am considering renting it for the weekend, I'd like to find out what lenses find the best balance between portability and size (i.e., small &

light)

It's the smallest, period.

So there's no alternative there.

My reference usually is the DXO ranking.

I also own an old 35 Zuiko, but I seldom use it so I cannot really compare the Zony to other 35's.

It does have soft corners and edges at f4, but less so at 2.8 or 5.6. Which is weird. DXO shows this as well. (sharpness - field map - cycle through the apertures.)

There's some distortion, but easy to correct.

It's definitely not as bitingly sharp as the 55, but totally adequate.

If size and money are not that important, there are some alternatives.

If it's no problem to use an adapter there are many more.

edit: I forgot to compare it to the 28-70. However there's no comparison there. ;-) The 28-70 is fine in the center though.
