Lonely woman in a trendy hat on La Jolla Shores beach looking towards Scripps Pier

I really like this photo. Technically it is not great; mid-day and just too much bright light.  Sky has fairly "dirty" color thanks to all the haze/smog coming off LA.  But I like the composition & this is why I uploaded it.  There were few other people on the beach but I cut them out;  I was messing with the sky for quite a bit in PS but eventually left it as is.

Were you the model? LOL.

Love the focus on the slippers and shallow DOF.

Westland Sea King MK48 SAR and NH90-NFH Caiman NATO Frigate Helicopter of the Belgian Navy in flight during coastal search and rescue mission

The helicopters took me by surprise, so I didn't have time to figure out a suitable shutterspeed thus showing the blades with motion blur. Not really satisfied with the static look and tried to solve it in Photoshop ...... but didn't get any luck  :( If clients would pay better, I'd probably try harder  -_-

Cheers,

Philippe

Philippe - I cancelled the red arrow from your "watching TV" pic (I like the pic too!). I did something a bit similar.....well sort of.....a few months ago. Actually I'm not sure if I love it or hate it. It's one of my few where I try to think out the box. Honest opinions please?

Thanks ;)
I think you did very well on the "couple of couch potatoes". Great use of DOF  :)

I like the other two shots as well, especially the plane with moon.
One point of critique though (Love doing that :P) Because the plane is far away, I think it would look better if you didn't use so much blur on the clouds/moon. Remember for both plane and moon/clouds shots, your lens was set at infinity distance ;) If the foreground subject was just a few centimeters or meters away, I'd use that much blur, but with a faraway plane, it looks just a bit unnatural. Just my two cents  ;)

Cheers,
Philippe

Some black and white goodness of Arundel Castle (I can't get away from Arundel, and I was there again today, and can't wait to post the results on Alamy! I took 767 photos in 2 hours. Thank goodness for digital!  :)

I noticed I posted a lazy cow photo twice, so sorry about that, I've removed the 2nd one now. I don't think I've posted this one before.

One point of critique though (Love doing that :P) Because the plane is far away, I think it would look better if you didn't use blur on the clouds nor moon (or just a tiny, tiny little bit). Remember for both plane and moon/clouds shots, your lens was set at infinity distance ;)

Thanks Philippe, I'm glad you like them and appreciate the feedback. I did try it without blur on the clouds and moon, as I agree with you of course that both would be focused in reality, so I did think of that. I wanted to help the plane stand out more though, and also hoped it might look like it was a lot lower than it actually was, where the focus may have put the background OOF (a little) as I took it at 600mm.......although of course if it was that low I wouldn't have needed 600mm, so the moon would have been a lot smaller and then the plane would be at infinity focus! I'm talking my way into agreeing I've done it wrong, aren't I?    I think I'll leave the one with clouds but try the moon without blur.  :)

[Edit] I forgot - Thanks for the tip on tags! I've added "couch potatoes". Actually that's one (as are the majority still) of images that I haven't re-tagged yet, so I've done that one now and added a lot more words and phrases than what's obvious. [/edit]

Geoff.

I've been waiting years to see this wonderful drake Mandarin duck again in breeding plumage. These ducks don't look real, they're so colourful and vibrant.

I think this is a Song Thrush. Would anyone be able to confirm that for me please? The shape and markings on the breast give it away, but there are other birds very similar. I have no idea if it's male or female though.

Yes, it's a song thrush. The sexes look similar (unless you're a song thrush, of course)...
