Anyone used sony repair in the UK

Recommended Posts

I've got a Sony RX100 mkiii and the top got wet and the flash longer works, rest of the camera is fine apart from the annoying small error message. My thinking is the cost of repair will be prohibitive so I may try to sell it in it's current state, it has a franiec grip and filter holder on it so it could be worth a bit as it is. I'm packing up photography as old age and health are getting the better of me. Anyone an idea of Sony's charging

I'm very sorry that I can't answer your question, but I would like to say how sorry I am to hear about anyone having to give up photography. You aren't the David who had a long career as a Fleet Street photographer, who was quite prolific on the old forum, are you?

I used Sony UK's repair centre last year to repair a Sony A7R and 24-70 that I broke in a fall. Various bits of damage to both items mainly around the mount which meant the lens wouldn't stay fixed and couldn't be recognised by the camera. Both were only three-months old! My experience with Sony was ..... woeful from a customer service perspective. When I first contacted them by phone there was no 'sorry to hear that' or similar sort of initial customer engagement - maybe I expected too much! The operator just launched into quoting the cost for an inspection fee (£117 for the body, £54 for the lens) before Sony would issue an estimate for repair - the implication was I had to pay the inspection fee AND a repair fee. I told them I would look around but in the end I contacted them again. Better person this time who clarified that the inspection fee did indeed have to be paid up front but it would form part of the repair fee, i.e. the final repair fee would be the excess over and above the inspection fee - hope that makes sense.

Sent the items to them. Never heard a thing for weeks, always had to chase them for updates and their eventual explanations were vague. Then there was parts delay. When I got them back they seemed okay. Put them away for a week then took them out on a long walk and the lens fell off the camera! Obviously the mount hadn't been repaired properly. Luckily I caught the lens just before e it hit the ground. Sent them off again and got them back a few weeks later. Been working well ever since but as said not impressed with Sony.

I broke the LCD on an a700 a few years ago and the service was awful. I took it into a camera shop in London expecting them to repair it for me as they had advertised in-house repairs, but in the end they sent it of to Sony, who somehow forgot to get back to them to say how much it would be.

I keep a diary so was able to check the dates and I took it in on 26th November 2009 and got it back on Jan 7th 2010 and there was an awful lot of chasing up and waiting in for deliveries that never came.

I think as Gary above said, there was an up front inspection fee which was included in the final cost, and I have no note of how much it was but it was definitely over £100. I managed to get it and a broken polariser on insurance which lessened the blow somewhat.

No I'm not that one, I worked a lot in wildlife/conservation for the love of the planet

. I made money shooting working freelance in any field that paid. If you google David Lawson WWF images a lot of my old stuff comes up and it's still used. I also shot for NSP, both these agencies no longer around.

I'm not giving up snapping for fun just don't need the hassle of a business. I'm three score years and ten this year and have only settled in a place of my own. last year. Been a nomad for a long time;-)

Thanks to the other guys who got back you've confirmed my suspicions. Any one want a cheap RX100 mk111

Sorry to hear of your Sony problems David.  Would your home insurance cover water damage perhaps - just a thought?

I wonder if there's a third party company that can carry out camera repairs.  There use to be one in Canterbury and they would repair most of the major makes at a much better price than the majors.

Good luck

John

ps. I'm a fellow vintage 1947'er too  :) .

I'm going to live with it or now.

1947 was a vintage year ;-)

I'm not a Sony user but I thought I would share this. Fixation have announced that they are starting an official Sony repair service in London in September. Fixation are already official Nikon and Canon repairers and have an excellent reputation so this must be really good news for Sony users in the UK if what people are saying above is a reflection of the current state of affairs.

There is also a Sony open day tomorrow for anybody in or near London who might want to have a look at Sony gear.
