Hello. I am fairly new to Alamy and just had 4 sales till now. I am in the process of updating my entries and optimizing them. Here is one I uploaded recently and I want to ask you what categories would it suit to have a good chance for a sale? Your advice is appreciated.

4 sales from just 20 images is outstanding!

To be honest, i think I would choose "Lifestyle" for this image. I personally treat "lifestyle" as a bit of a catch-all category for any person/life related images that don't seem to fit in any other category.

Personally, I don't see how choosing categories can influence making sales. If an image doesn't fit neatly into a category, then I don't bother choosing one.

At the moment, I don't think it does make a difference. I get the impression that it's been added now with some future thinking in mind. I agree that it can just simply be ignored.

Thanks! I was thinking maybe people searching for photos can do a search or browse according to category...

Alamy does have a "Browse images by category" section on its homepage, but they appear to be images that have been hand-selected by Alamy.

I suspect the aim of adding the category in AIM is to make this "hand selection" easier for the Alamy selection people to do as the contributors then essentially do a first pass.

.. but this is just my guess!

Sounds like a good theory to me. We are lending Alamy a hand, so to speak.

I wonder how many buyers actually browse by category. It seems like a labour-intensive way of looking for images. It`s usually more efficient to make searches using specific terms.

  • 2 weeks later...

There really need to be some sort 'people' category. I have lots of pics of everyday life (another missing one) where that would be the best option.

And well-known people too. 'Entertainment and celebrities' doesn't seem right for backbench MPs.
