Graham
29/04/2017, UK, Guardian, p46, car damaged in rear collision, DYHH3C, Graham Prentice [Cropped. No credit - poss not via Alamy] Yes, it is mine, thank you for finding it. I have read the article in the Guardian, which made my blood boil. Whiplash is not limited to neck injuries, but can affect other parts of the body. The photo is of my wife's car. She was stationary at a junction waiting to turn left when a large Range Rover type car crashed into the back of her car. The woman driving the other car was looking right rather than concentrating on looking where she was going: you can see the result! The police would not come out or even take any details: the other driver got off scot free, despite clearly (at best) having been driving without due care and attention, and may not even have suffered an insurance premium increase, because I believe it was insured under a company policy. My wife and daughter who was a passenger, on the other hand, were shaken up and about a day later my wife developed a severe stiffness in her hip. Our car was only a few months old; fortunately it was not a write off, but we were without it for several weeks. To cut a long story short, my wife had to put up with numerous appointments for scans and consultations, both with our own specialist and with doctors appointed by the insurers, in the latter case three appointments in two separate locations each an hour's drive from where we live: the insurers gave every impression of gratuitously putting obstacles in the way, making life as difficult as possible and doing everything they could, by fair means or foul (more the latter than the former), to discourage my wife from pursuing a claim. Although nothing showed up on scans, my wife suffered permanent damage which continues to this day to affect her ability to walk long distances (one of our joys on holiday, particularly in Switzerland and Austria) and gives her considerable discomfort on car journeys of more than an hour, or if there is any sudden movement such as sharp braking. The injury was classified as whiplash and is permanent, even though it was not her neck. Just because it is not necessarily visible from a scan does not mean that it does not exist. She did eventually receive compensation, but it does not make up for the lasting effects, or the frustration that the police were simply not interested in pursuing the other driver, who was able to drive away from the scene as we awaited the towing vehicle from the AA and suffered no inconvenience whatever, despite the fact that the whole situation was entirely of her making and her fault. Graham Shocking. I hope she is getting better with time. The reason for this is probably the huge amount of falsely claimed whiplash compensations that drive the insurers mad - as it's so difficult to diagnose. I once had an accident on a fast going escalator on the London Underground which was switched off abruptly and insurers just didn't want to know about our injuries - and I'm not talking about emotional pains either. For 10 years afterwards I was reminded of the event whenever I had to take an escalator and that was about 10 times a day.

Graham
Having the photo used for that article must be literally adding insult to injury! Actually I was very glad to have seen it used - better than not! It was always only going to be used for a car-crash type of article, so I was prepared for it. It has in fact previously been used to illustrate an article on a similar topic in the Daily Mail. Thank you to the people who expressed kind wishes towards my wife. The accident was several years ago, and the effects are permanent. I was reminded while we were out yesterday that she also feels the injury every time we go over a speed bump. There are always balancing acts: should bumps be used to reduce cars traffic to a crawl at the expense of a huge jolt even if travelling within the legal speed limit? I suspect my answer would not tally with those of the speed bump instigators, but anyone injured by a speeding car might well think differently. The Mail and the Guardian are right to raise the issue of fraudulent whiplash claims, of which there are undoubtedly many, but for so-called experts to cast doubt on whether or not it even exists is not, in my opinion, acceptable. And the ambulance chasing lawyers and claims consultants are undoubtedly a big part of the problem: there seems to be some kind of database of accidents which they can access and use to make unsolicited calls to those involved. The calls went on for at least a couple of years afterwards, including to our daughter who was in the car but uninjured and who had no intention of making a claim, and long after my wife's claim had been settled.
