Has anyone ever sold any of your first four submissions?

Recommended Posts

Just out of curiosity - and this obviously won't apply to anyone who joined Alamy before the days of online uploads and 4 initial submissions - has anybody ever sold any of their first four?  I haven't - though I've sold 3 of my second batch of 6.  Maybe I was too cautious.  Although, looking back, it didn't seem so at the time.

On the old forum, we once found an image that had been published, while the photographer had only 4 images in his/her collection. The collection was quite recent, which could be established by looking at the Alamy ref #.

When I joined Alamy, I had to submit 10 images. The first sold two months later. Only three out of those initial 10 have ever sold. Number 11 has sold for the first time on March 10 of this year; almost 11 years after I have submitted it. Number 12 has only made $0.83.

As I am a regular contributor to the how was your month threads, one can look up my averages and while those have been falling during the worldwide recession, luckily they are still way higher than 83 cents. That first sale was for $171; my latest was for $240 for an image shot in 2008.

Way back in 2007, one image from my initial submission (10 images then, if memory serves) literally got snapped up right away, and it remains a fairly regular seller.

But that was then and this is now...

Ah. but we were all younger then - and more foolish.

The first four was uploaded on 28th July 2009. One of these has sold three times - another twice, it took some time, however, and not for the amounts some of my later images were sold for. My first ones were typically microstockish, it took a short while to get the hang of it. I must have been accepted the same day as I already uploaded more on the 29th. In January 2010 I had the first decent sale of $245 of a news related RM image.

I started with Alamy in 2006. Since then i have licensed/sold 2 of my initial submission. not sure if they would sell today really as they were shot on a fujifilm 3600 or something like that. Pretty much useless these days for anything except internet/web pix.

It was an interesting trip down memory lane. My first accepted submission consisted of photos from Edinburgh taken in 2007 with my old D70 and uploaded in 2008 when I first discovered stock photography. Two of those photos were licensed in 2014, one in May and one in July. Others from that trip were uploaded later and licensed sooner.

My first Alamy submission(s) were on CD, with medium format film scanned 200MB TIFF files (CD in the post, wait 2-3 weeks, wait for CD processing to clear, pass QC, then keyword. No panic then if nothing from QC after 24 hours).

Two of those original test images have had multiple licences from Alamy. One of them is what I think must be one of my most zoomed images.

The fourth image I uploaded to Alamy, on 02/06/06, AB6PRD, was licensed on 19/01/07 for the grand sum of $152.50. It was next licensed on 27/10/07 for $84.80 and lastly on 19.11.13 for $70.67.

I can see why it's sold.

Not sold any of first 4. (10 back in my day!) but sold no 14 - a pic of Taj Mahal. Probably wouldn't stand a chance today with the number of images on Alamy - 18,878.

Incidentally, I wouldn't want to be on page 189 in that search.

To be honest I can't be absolutely sure what my first four images were, but, from fading memory, included amongst  them is one of my best earning shots, tending towards 4 figures gross.

Problem is there has been a steady fall in the value of the sales year upon year, so it is approaching the magic $1000 mark asymptotically, i.e. though close, it may never quite make it.

That's a brilliant math analogy. I imagine that each of our images has a revenue half-life as well.

Just checked - none of my four submission images have sold.  They were taken with a Canon 500D and Kit Zoom Lens.  They're not bad but don't come anywhere near the image quality I get from my Sony RX100 M3.  I was quite surprised as I recall feeling quite pleased with the quality of my early work at the time.

It's easy to find your first four submissions - Just use Manage Images and work back to the beginning - you should see your first four right at the start,

John
