New zoom page and editing images

Whatever contributors think of the new suggestion of similar images that come up with a zoom, could the 'edit' option for the photographer please be put BEFORE the other images - I've just been adding a keyword to several of mine and it requires a lot of scrolling.

Yes to all of the above!  It's both distracting and frustrating to have to scroll through all the extra images that pop up to get to the additional details of the main photo (and ability to edit it).

Are people finding many of their images that do NOT have any "similar images" showing?

I totally agree that at least the Edit link and location info should be above the similar images.

I don't like it that other contributors' images show on a page intended to showcase my work. Extending this concept from contributor to agency level would be like if Alamy showed Getty/Corbis/whatever images on their web site.

One thing which I particularly dislike is that the similar images function is based on the caption or keywords, not on the actual image content. Instead of showing off some of my similar images, there's now in many cases dozens of other images not really similar neither to my picture nor to themselves but from people who just caption and keyword dozens of their pictures exactly the same => same caption and same keywords => pictures must be similar => let's show them all.

Yes that's easy, just have content nobody else has.

Look at my EHKGT5; E0KGN1; EHRGG5.

Totally agree.

And the contributor's name (synonym) should also move up.

B.t.w. the similar images are only based on the caption, not the keywords.

Cheers,

Philippe

Almost Philippe: your caption; their keywords.

Bear in mind you want to be underneath as many other images as you can. Especially if you do not have stellar rank. This way you will sneak in with the front runner.

Surely the images that show up under other peoples'  images do not count towards zooms, would they?

It would explain the increase in zooms.

wim

edit: No probably not, but clicking on those would. There's the solution to the increase.

You just beat me while i was editing my last reply  ;)

Here's what I added: See here (compare caption "Sudden surprise" with similar images) >>>> You're correct. Our caption only - their keywords.

Cheers,

Philippe

An excellent illustration of how it works, and equally funny :

I do agree as well +1 one, link should move above the other images, it is a pain if it is below.

Thanks for the analysis Philippe - this is actually not too bad news, as can be used in the photographers favor.

I think about adding my synonym to the caption of my pictures and my keywords.

That way only similars of myself would be showing up.

but doing this on 800 images is a pain - doing it on 40.000 (ie Philippe) is beyond what one could call a nightmare.

Actually, before fooling around with alternate image suggestions and where they are placed on the page, I wish Alamy would first get search fixed.

I do have some content no one else has, but whether my image or the message that no images match the search shows up depends on the keywords used.

Add one keyword and the computer says there is no match, but the keyword in question is in my set yet somehow invisible to the search engine.

Since I have more than one example of this problem in my small collection, I imagine that those of you who have thousands more would have many more such examples.

Thanks, Philippe. I've brought the subject up with them before. The answer was that they're working on it and will get back to me when it's fixed.

They haven't as yet gotten back to me and [while there has been some improvement] it isn't fixed. All that kind of tech wizardry is over my head and I assume it's a complicated problem.

I have to wonder, though, if the people who are deciding how to manage image suggestions and where to place them on the page are the same ones who should be spending their time fixing the search engine.

Cheers,

Don

I've been trying for three months to get them to fix a situation with my solitary hyacinth macaws. They show up in a search for "macaw" or "macaws" and for hyacinth macaw" but not for "hyacinth macaws" though I have the plural in my keywords. There are plenty of solitary macaws by other photographers that show up under the plural. I've only sent two emails about it but the first one was the middle of November. Frustrating. Like Don, I am sure there are more in my collection and many, many more in Alamy as a whole.

I can see them, I think: EWM1M7 and EG3DEW turn up for "hyacinth macaws".

Just not very high up, because the plural is in the caption only. Not in your keywords. Could it be that the caption at some point has been un-searchable?

Indeed. It has been fixed! I see what you mean, Wim, about "macaws" not appearing below in my keywords but it is there in Manage Images -- in Essential Keywords --so that must be why they are appearing far down. The Alamy system is only seeing it in the Caption. I guess I should send another email. They are on the 2nd page so maybe OK? My pairs are appearing on the first.

Wim, the ones you mention are my pairs and I see that "macaws" doesn't appear below in the keywords on those either. I don't care about that as it doesn't usually seem to affect the actual search results. My solitary macaws are appearing now -- further down -- and they are FA4XAY and  EN2GH2.

Paulette

Edit: I thought I added something here before but I guess not. I'm happy now with what is happening. On the search using the plural "macaws" my pairs show up first and using the singular brings one of my solitary birds up first. Three are on the first page and one on the second. That's all OK with me. Glad it was fixed.

Yay, the problems I've had with the search engine seem to be fixed as well!  "Vancouver Mountain" now shows 4644 images, rather than the 32 images it had been showing for months.  Thank you alamy for fixing it.
