Hi all! My name is David, I'm based in Melbourne, Australia and I'm an amateur photographer. I recently decided to try my luck at selling some microstock and for some reason Alamy has accepted my photo's and here I am! There's no accounting for good taste these days :)  Aside from Alamy's bad judgement in accepting my pictures, I am delighted to have been accepted and can't wait to build up a decent size portfolio - until then, I have no expectations other than to strive to constantly improve by learning from you all.

This looks like a fantastic site and it has by far the best forum around - having read through many of the posts here you all are very supportive of each other - I'm looking forward to chatting to many of you moving forward :)

Cheers,
Dave.

I wish you luck and good fortune. The definitions are perhaps getting a little blurred, but it should be pointed out that Alamy is NOT MICROSTOCK. There are occasionally some prices that start to resemble microstock, but by and large, we are aiming for more substantial price levels.

I would rather be sticking needles in my eyes than chasing after the dollar-a-snap model which is what microstock is basically about.

Hi Dave, welcome.

I hope you're aware that you cannot upload any pics to Alamy that you have on sale on Microstock sites.

This is partly true. If you have non-editorial RF on Microstock then you can upload them here also as long you set them also as RF. The problem starts if you mix RM with RF. What you have as RF on microstock can not be uploaded here and set as RM.

Anyway i think it is better to stick even with RF to one place. It is not nice for clients if they buy a licence here for 90 dollars and find later out that the image is available on Microstock for 3 dollars. For this reason i would put photos only to Alamy or only microstock if you want to be serious here. I think this is what Vpics wanted to say.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I am on a number of sites, although I only started a week ago. Over that time I have realised that Alamy are a cut above and not Micro so I will be taking that into account in the future.

All my images are set as RF on all sites and I was under the impression there were no restrictions on uploading the same images here - although your point about the price differences is very valid, and again that's something I'll take on board from now on too.

My highest priority at the moment is to improve the quality of my work - especially composition - until then, I don't expect to make many (if any) sales.

Cheers,
Dave.

Edit - I just noticed that my profile says I don't have any images up yet - that's wrong, i have a grand total of 26 approved and on sale  . Something's amiss.

You have to sign out of the forum then sign back in to see your latest on sale images.

Welcome, and I'll 2nd what is said above. You will get a bad rep with buyers if they find your images here and on microstock. Then you'll wonder why you are not making money here.

I'd advise shooting specifically for Alamy. Not saying nix to micro. Just not duplicates.

The nice thing about shooting editotial is you can shoot people to your heart's content without having to have releases. Although they are needed to sell for advertising.

You just have to list unreleased images as RM.

This isn't like microstock where you start selling with a small number of images. I think I had around 500 in my port before making a sale, and 2000 before seeing sales pick up. A few do make early sales, but that's not the norm unless you happen to have something a buyer really wants and you're image isn't competing with hundreds of other similars.

I really don't expect to make any sales for quite some time. My photos need to improve and as you say, volume is the key.

From your images, you seem to have quite a few that should require property releases, such as the community gardens, the sculptures etc.  but you have them as RF with no releases.

I better check up on that, the garden is public land though.. Thanks!

100% incorrect.

If you are uploading any content with us that you have on microstock sites, just make sure you select them to be RF here.

Welcome aboard David :)

Though not against Alamy's rules it is still a disadvantage for your own earnings. Buyers often use Google Image to find the same image at a cheaper price. And furthermore, micro best sellers are usually not the same as macro best sellers.

Welcome David and good luck with your images

Looking at them they are colourful, and eventually as numbers increase you will see sales, but make sure your keywording is good - for example the pic you have of the yellow wheel is a "wheel of fortune" which is a term which is searched for by the buyers, but you haven't got fortune in your keyword set.....

Good advice also from others above

Thanks guys, I'll update! :)

The first lot of pics are really just to get a presence, to learn... I know they are not commercial as I haven't developed an eye for it yet.  Having said that, ive been researching and taking all your advice and will alter what I upload in the future.

It's a huge learning curve.

I really appreciate all the feedback and words of encouragement! Thanks :)

Cheers,
Dave.

You need to be really careful about assigning pictures as RF. Jill has already mentioned the photos featuring art works which will be out-of-bounds as RF images. I would also add to that the two with the identifiable numbered boat at the jetty. It could possibly be argued that the boat is not the main feature of the image, but there is little point in leaving any opening for legal problems in an image where it can easily be resolved beforehand. Either clone out the numbers or set the images as RM.

I also consider zoo animals to be "property" taken on possibly private property so needing a model release. Some zoos are more restrictive than others in terms of using images of their animals.

Very nice pictures  ;)

Little tip: be more specific about locations and add the exact names (+ Latin names) of animals and plants.

Cheers and good luck with the sales,

Philippe

Thanks. I will definitely be following your tip!!
