Doc Posted June 24, 2015 Share Posted June 24, 2015 Hi all, I am now the proud new owner of this camera - but have the bunch-of-banana fingers of a normally digital SLR user - so am not using this camera very efficiently and certainly not quickly. What walkabout settings do you use to enable speedy but effective use? Is "Intelligent Auto" the best setting to have it on for general everyday use? (With RAW of course) Thanks! I did have the original RX100 for a very short time but could not get on with it and processing the raws from it was hopeless, could not get a decent image, so sold it on quickly. John Walker Posted June 24, 2015 Share Posted June 24, 2015 I've had the Mk1 and now the Mk3. Probably 95% of the images in my portfolio were taken on the Auto setting (Green Camera Icon) and in RAW. Not so brilliant for low light work but fortunately I don't do much of that. So for daylight walkabout the camera is incredibly reliable for focus and exposure. The viewfinder clearly shows where the focus is so it's easy to allow for. Have a look at my portfolio and see the results for yourself. Works for me and I have regular sales. I still have the original mk I RX100 sat on my desk as I type this. My walkabout settings are generally f8 @ 200 iso and let the speed take care of itself. Moving up to 400 iso on cloudy days. The reason my camera is sat on my desk is that it appears to be faulty now as all raws from 200 thro 800 iso now show a lot of noise?? Betty LaRue Posted June 24, 2015 Share Posted June 24, 2015 I took the RX100 to St. Croix with me, and probably 60% of the hundreds of shots I took there were with it, the rest with the D800. I set it on auto and fired away. I was in a cottage very close to the beach, and popped out constantly to see if there were photo ops. I didn't enjoy popping out with the Nikon. I had this very tiny purse I wore cross body with the Sony, my cottage keys, and a couple of other small items in it. My kit was so light it didn't tire me. loved having the Sony. I have many images on here from the Sony. I also have taken indoor shopping mall shots with it, great images. Some I took in a dimly lit eye exam room showed noise, but more of a grain than the ugly stuff. Betty Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

And now it's twice as long ;-) When shooting RAW or RAW+jpg the green Intelligent Auto and Superior Auto are the same according to Sony. When shooting jpg only, the Superior Auto behaves like Hand-held Twilight, which is not suited for movement of any kind, but is good at producing less noise and the least blur in low light. Unfortunately: no RAW. Usually I use Intelligent Auto as a starting point. Almost all functions are disabled in this mode however. Including ISO, because it uses Auto-ISO. Therefore it's useful to set the Auto ISO limits beforehand in P. In P, click the menu button. Go to camera icon 3; click on ISO and move to Auto with the dial. In AUTO, click on the right side of the dial and set the lowest ISO that you will allow. The choice is upwards from ISO 160, which tells us that that is it's native lowest one. I set it at that. (Not just native, because it's a Sony it's probably dynamic.) Then set the highest. Mine is at 1600. For critical work, I set it at 800. If I would understand how the pre-programmed 3 MRs (memory recall) would work, I might use these. Now MR only f*s up my settings from time to time. No way to disable it. The video button can be set to work only in Video mode. Which is far better than the original NEX. Populate the function button with the functions you want. Click the menu button. Go to cog wheel icon 2; click on Function Button; then Function 1 and point and shoot. Mine are: 1 Exposure Comp (usually at +0.7) 2 Flash Comp (usually at -1) 3 DRO (usually at 5) 4 ISO (usually at AUTO) 5 Metering Mode (Multi) 6 Focus Mode (Multi) 7 Autofocus Area (Single-shot AF) In A;S and P mode I have the Exposure Comp set to +0,7 And ISO at Auto or 200. In A I tend to close the aperture 1 or 2 stops. Wide open is certainly good though. I avoid f10 and 11. In M there is Bulb, but not in S. (facepalm) Also not in the app of course because that is green Intelligent Auto when set to RAW+jpg. You can however combine Bulb and 2 or 10sec selftimer. You can however not combine bracketed with selftimer. (facepalm) Bracketed is limited to 0,3 or 0,7 which makes it useless. DRO is a sort of 1 shot HDR - jpg only. However with selftimer. You win some... After a couple of days I have set my display settings at none for shooting, but all for reviewing. The display button can be customized, mine has all boxes ticked. enjoy! wim The part about the restricting the ISO setting in the 2 AUTO modes may be wrong as I cannot repeat it. There are setting that you can experiment with for low light and it doesn't necessarily have to be always set in RAW to get good results. Addict Posted June 25, 2015 Share Posted June 25, 2015 I have the mk 1 - it goes as low as 80 iso. Do you see a sign better image at iso 80 vs say 200? I am using P quite a bit at 80 and letting the camera choose rest. Green setting also quite a bit. I have not bumped up exp comp but did set fill flash down to -1 and - .7 found it too dark. . .?
