Joseph Clemson Posted March 25, 2015 Share Posted March 25, 2015 Hands up. How many people are using the 3rd party Magic Lantern firmware extension for Canon DSLRs? The ML website contains dire warnings about the possible dangers to one's camera and there is a comprehensive forum thread on what to do when your camera locks up or appears to die. The very existence of this thread makes me nervous, but I'm also tempted by the functions that ML offers. It may be that there are many more happy users than sad ones, but I'd like to know. So, how many people here have used ML successfully and how many have a horror story. Anyone with experience of it on the Canon 60D? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest Posted March 25, 2015 Share Posted March 25, 2015 Big fan of ML which I have been using since mid-2014 (can't remember when exactly). I use in in my 5D2 for all shoots, needed it mainly for bracketed exposures - it expands the Canon from 3 to 12 now. Probably shot 80k exposures with it and only found one little bug. if you switch off and take out the card, to download, it can on occasion not realise that the camera is off and drain the battery. Now I simply pop the batteries from the grip so they are not contacting and no problems. The dire warnings seem to be simply.....you do this at your own risk. A couple of days ago I saw this at the NEC show: http://www.turnspro.com and I remembered that ML has an intervalometer function. I think I might be shooting video soon - only five and a half years after buying the camera and intending to do video at the earliest possible opportunity. Alan Might want to look at the Syrp Genie (WEX stock it) which also can be attached to a slider. CVP.com have lots of sliders/motion control gear which can help add value to clips with motion/movement if you decide to shoot video. Good reviews on Laforet's blog about gear he uses. Corbis mentioned some time back that they were impressed with video via ML - I assume shot in raw via ML which does make a big diffference in DSLRs. HTH. At this stage in my career as a videographer (i.e. before it starts), anything helps! I did some fun stuff with Standard 8 in the 1970s but I don't think that helps a great deal! The only proviso, which is explained in their blurb anyway, is that the weight it can support is limited and although a 5D2 is OK it would probably have to be with a prime lens. As for the price, I misunderstood slightly when I was at the stand. He said they had obtained funding from KickStart but I didn't realise that this was still ongoing and that the £45 was a special early price - I assumed it would be the normal price for the product. I've put in my pledge for one now. At that price it's worth a punt. As for the weight, if the thing proves useful I will probably try to get a 2nd hand 50mm or 35mm prime. I would have preferred not to carry another lens with me as video is secondary to my photography. I usually carry the 24-105mm and 24mm TS-E, I am guessing both would be too heavy.
