Another Sony a7000 rumour

Recommended Posts

I've been hearing about the elusive A7000 for months now.

I'm sure Sony will have another camera out soon just as much as the sun will rise tomorrow.

I think Sony puts out cameras more frequently than other manufacturers.

Too bad they didn't put out the FE lenses when they promised or I would have considered staying with the system.

Sounds like it might be worth a look, especially if it has IS that works with third party lenses. I like the touch screen on my 5N, so that would be another plus. After my "ruck" with Sony over the A7, they may stand a chance of redeeming themselves with this one.

More interested to see if Fuji are going to deliver an X Pro 2 though!

Never used one, but I presume that a touch screen would be good for selecting the point of focus when using auto focus glass? There are occasions, particularly with camera mounted on tripod, that you need to focus off centre and the current set up is far from user friendly.

Assuming that it is effective, image stabilisation would be great for use with my collection of old prime lenses. Most of the time I can take blur free photos, but there's always that one special exposure that turns out to be unusably duff.

A few more pixels wouldn't come amiss either, primarily to allow greater scope for cropping, but not if it means poorer IQ.

Slightly agog at the prospect.

I never thought I'd like touchscreen until I had the Canon EOS M. This thing can be so stealthy when you use the touchscreen!  I used it to take photos that no one even knew I was shooting.Shutter is silent as well.

You can point to where you want to focus as well as tap again to snap the shutter.Of course you can still use it in the traditional way.

Other than the A7000,this Sony looks interesting as well. Full frame for under 799 GBP

Yes it seems the ideal camera for that reason,  however there is a trade off, it is called slow focusing and hunting with 3rd party lenses,  i have the latest Sony 7 Mk II,  great camera with Sony FE lenses, in the last few days i have been testing Canon L lenses,  all have slow focusing and sometimes missing focus causing them to hunt,  however the IS system does work.

I imagine that is mainly due to the fact that 3rd-party lenses can't take full advantage of the hybrid contrast/phase detection AF system.

How do you like this camera? I was not crazy about the A7 or A7R. My ratio of focus/not in focus was horrible.

That's rite John!  the hybrid contrast/phase detection AF system is a problem with 3rd party AF lenses,  getting off topic just a touch, i have just noticed with my night shots from 2 hours ago that they have a strong Magenta cast in the dark sky and finding it hard to remove in PP with  DXO and LR. Hmmm. I hope the 7ii is not just a daytime camera.

Perhaps Lynn Palmer can come in on this as i know Lynn has this particular camera.

Looks like further investigation will be necessary.

Linda, i am not sure!

I have only had it a week and still trying to get a feeling for the 7ii, to be fair i have always used pro and semi pro Canon DSLRS and find the Sony a bit of a toy, although when it comes to image quality/ sharpness and detail/ it is brilliant with no focusing issues with the Sony kit lens.

What sold me on this was the hand held night shots that Lynn Palmer put up in another post about 2 weeks ago, i would have to agree except for the Magenta cast in dark skies that i am getting and some Banding, i am using Auto WB, perhaps this is the problem.

You might want to go on the Sony Forums on dpreview,Flickr groups,sonyalpharymours.com   and ask others if they have this issue!

This photog tests a lot of cameras and has a different problem with them on noise for the A7II

Hi Paul, sorry for the delay but I have company in town and haven't had much time for the forum this week. So far I've been shooting a lot of night scenes in Miami which means lots of neon including magenta but I can't say that I've noticed magenta in my night skies. I sometimes feel the need to auto tone or auto color the images but I'm doing it less often with the Sony than I did with the 5dm2. I just took a bunch of shots in a nightclub of the dancers and singers with stage lighting. I haven't had a chance to process them yet but I'm still very happy with my night shots.

Hi Paul, I'm using Priority Mode with Auto ISO and I set the Aperture to f8 or f10 most of the time unless I want the background bokeh. During the day the ISO automatically drops to 100-200 but at night the camera selects 1600-6400 to maintain a fast exposure (for minimal motion blur). At 6400 post processing requires some noise reduction, however less than I would have expected with my Canon. Aside from ISO, f-stop and speed what else are you setting? If I were using a tripod and the subject wasn't moving I would select a lower ISO and might turn off in-body stabilization (does Sony recommend turning it off for tripod work?). I really need to spend more time reading the manual, especially for focusing options.

Edit: Reading back through some of the posts above...I've already sold off most of my Canon EF lenses and I'm shooting mostly with my Sony kit lens. I have a couple used Minolta prime lenses and the Sony adapter. i haven't used the lenses a lot but they seem to focus relatively fast but I'm not certain I will be happy with the older lenses. Paul, didn't you say you purchased the Metabones adapter, not the Sony? Maybe that is part of the issue.

On a separate topic, I shot a few images with the 55-210mm zoom from my NEX6. It's an APS-C lens and crops down the image a bit but it fits the A7ii, focuses quickly and the images are sharp...they just aren't full frame.

Today my photo dealer swapped the Sony 7ii for another,  so the first thing i did was went out and shot the same night scenes, only a couple of shots, i am happy to say no Magenta casting,  Now a Happy Chappy  :D.

Lynn, I just returned the Metabones 1V,  a very expensive adapter that became very slow in focusing after making the latest firmware update,  to my knowledge Sony do not make adapters for Canon EF lenses, so now i am kinda stuck for a good adapter.

One more question Lynn, when shooting with the 55-210mm how much do you lose in resolution,  for example what dose  the file size end up as.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sony seems short of good glass, in respect of a standard zoom, for the a6000 so the a7000 is a no go for me. However if there is a new weather sealed 16-70 zeiss, which has been rumoured, and if it's optically an improvement on the current one I could be tempted.
I recently sold my Fuji outfit and was looking at the a6000 to replace it but the panasonic GX7 seems a better option at the minute because of the lens line up.

Lenses used to be a big problem with the Sony NEX/a line. Their choices for an all-around, wide-range zoom is still not good, but that might be, in part, due to unrealistic expectations. Do I want a oversized front-heavy lens for a small, light, unobtrusive camera? I do not; two different concepts working against one another. I own primes for my NEX-6 and 7. If you want a quality zoom maybe you should consider the RX10, with its 24-200 f/2.8 Zeiss. The RX10 took some time for me to adjust to, but now I use it a lot.

Hi Paul, I'm so happy they swapped it out for you and the problem has been solved! I was feeling quite badly that you had bought based on my experience but weren't entirely satisfied. The adapter is definitely an issue for Canon lenses. I chose to sell my Canon and Canon lenses but have yet to find the ideal zoom. davidl is right about the shortage of good glass for the Sony. I consider the 55-210mm lens a stop gap solution for me at best. The image sizes are as follows for it:

55-210mm lens on the Sony A7ii (Full Frame sensor)

29.5M

2624pixel x 3936pixel

8.747” x 13.12”

300 ppi

55-210mm lens on the Sony NEX6 (APS-C sensor)

45.9M

4912pixel x3264pixel

16.373 x 10.88

300 ppi

Oddly the images produced with the 55-210mm lens on the A7ii are a bit smaller than those produced on the NEX6 but subjectively they seem a bit sharper on the A7ii.

I was not convinced with the sharpness of the 28-70 kit lens, not happy with Metabones Canon system as only the Canon 16-35L was the only lens that gave average focus speed, all my other L lenses gave a lot of problems.

So rather than sell off the 7MK2  i bit the bullit and now have the Sony 70-200 G and 16-35 Sony Zeiss,  so far so good,  i am very happy with the system,  however the Zeiss 16-35 shows more distortion and is harder for software to correct than the Canon 16-35.

Nothing is perfect!

I will keep my Canon gear until i am really convinced that Sony 7MK2 is the way to go.

Thanks for your input Ed. I've cosidered the RX10 and haven't completely dismissed it. I've shot on just about everything over the years, retirement has liberated me from clients so I can now just please myself. I have to admit my expectations are probably too high, I used to shoot on Zeiss with Contax cameras back in the manual focus days and also had an Angenieux 70-210 f3.5. What a lens that was came in an argon sealed bag nice wooden box with a filter and lens hood. Sorry drifting off on one now;-)
