ChrisC Posted January 21, 2015 Share Posted January 21, 2015 Although I'm not that new to Alamy, I'm new to the forum and new to receiving some money from stock sales. I have been sporadic with adding images as I wasn't sure if I had what I classed as newsworthy items, so wasn't sure how it all works and I hadn't seen or looked at the forum. I had three small sales in 2013 and two last year, the last one, which ended up being cancelled, but then bought again, so I received some money in January 2015, as my balance was finally over $75. The same day the money went in my account I had a new sale, (just below the limit) and I also discovered the forum and the "Have you found any Alamy Photographs?", which I didn't understand, until I searched for the photograph that was sold and couldn't find it, I then asked Alamy, who told me the info was in the sale! Whilst trying to find this image on Monday, I found a new image of mine in The Sunday Times, which although it had been zoomed, I wasn't aware it was sold and I still haven't been told by Alamy (and I emailed them Tuesday morning), As I posted my find and mentioned this in the "have you found...?" A number of answers appeared from some of the members. Therefore, I have started this thread so I can glean some more information from members? I understand now that news sales don't always get mentioned, (due to the way the industry works) which isn't a great help, but like this new image that was sold, I have had other images zoomed, could they have been sales? Can this apply in book sales, or other media outlets, or just newspapers? Also, how can I help with "Have you found...?" thread, and if Lynne or Julie Edwards want to tell me more please do, as we are now off the "Have you found...." topic Thanks in advance Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jill Morgan Posted January 21, 2015 Share Posted January 21, 2015 Hi Chris. Most sales don't usually appear until 3 months or so after they are actually purchased. In the "Have you found" thread, these images are of those people have found while looking at the online version of newspapers or actual papers and post them for us to see. It will let people know that an image of theirs has been found in a paper or magazine or whatever (usually its newspapers) so they will be aware to start looking for the sale to be reported in about 3 months time. If 3 months passes and no sale is reported, then that is when they will question member services about the sale. Very few zooms actually turn into sales. and many sales are never zoomed. Customers quite often put images in their lightbox then go over them later. Any images zoomed from a lightbox are not recorded. Jill Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Google Image search will also find quite a lot. I have installed the plugin to the Chrome browser (one of my browsers) - it works by clicking the small camera in the corner of any image you hover over on the Internet. A very fast way of searching. Google Image search can work in many other ways. Use the way you prefer. (Excellent because not all media give credit to the photographer or Alamy). You could consider Tineye as another image search engine that requires a plugin, search for tineye. Simple Google text searches on the three search terms: your name, alamy, photo. All, or any two of them together will bring a lot, too. Especially books presented online with the credit lists of photographers will show up. Occassionally also the pages with the photo. Good luck. Niels Thanks Neils I now have added both plug ins to my browser, simpler than what I was doing before. Last weeks sale still can't be found even though the sale information says it was used in a "National Newspaper with + 750,000 circulation. There's no reason to look for the reference and metadata isn't often preserved although" Alamy" and the subject sometimes comes up trumps. This is a long game- Image Search has found results for me after two or three years. Bryan Posted January 21, 2015 Share Posted January 21, 2015 The images found threads can't possibly show every sale, us folk who post there are unpaid part timers (other than our annual invite to the Alamy Florida weekend, becoming boring) who are looking for their own photos and/or are finding the searching more interesting than television! We therefore don't look in every edition while there are numerous published photos credited to Alamy that are next to impossible to find within a reasonable timescale. I now know the "look" of a posed model agency shot, and only bother to trace its source if I can find it within a few seconds, those from us TOGS I spend a bit more time on. However some people clearly went to the obscure and minimalist school of keywording and those shots are rarely identified. If you want a better service get involved yourself. Edit - Mark what has Tineye done to deserve that? Far more useful for locating other folks' shots than Google, although not so good for looking for your own. To think, I thought it was straight forward, if it showed on my Alamy as a sale, I had a sale and it was on the date it specified, also once my balance was clear I received some money, everything else was irrelevant. This will probably be there (or a newer version) - it shows with a little blue camera to the left): Search by Image (by Google) 1.5.1 This extension allows you to initiate a Google search using any image on the web. By the Google Images team. When you have got the correct extension installed any photo on the internet will show up with a clickable small blue camera in the bottom, right corner when hovering the image. The problem was whilst searching a sale on 5th January that sale, I presumes, as it said it was "National Newspaper print & web" I would find it easily by searching for my name and Alamy, as I did with another newspaper sale, but I can't find it, fine that's a sale so yes, simple This image hasn't come up in My Alamy customer search, so I now presume this was a straight sale? Am I correct in assuming that? Therefore I shouldn't be concerned and move on Then Whilst searching, on Monday, I found a new one that was in The Sunday Times, the 18th ,it hasn't come up as sold, but it has come up as searched, so as I wasnt aware of how it all works, I asked the question, I presume with this new one, it was searched then sold and I take it this can now take up to 3 months to appear in my sales, is that correct? Also sorry to be a pain, if I see an image whilst searching for mine, that just says Alamy and no name, should I right click and add to the "Have you found..." topic? To be useful on 'have you found' it needs to have the Alamy reference and the photographer's name. Contributors do this by searching on likely keywords. I think the proces finding the image on Alamy will be the hardest part. As Bryan mentions not all have the adequate keywords. You will have to search the Alamy database with keywords you find obvious for the image. When/if you find it, you may want to use only a thumbnail and the Alamy image id number together with the photographers name, or rather the pseudonym used for the image, to report in the "Have you found" thread.
