Paul Mayall Posted January 4, 2015 Share Posted January 4, 2015 Hi Folks's, i have a planned trip to shoot wildlife in Africa this coming March. All of my telephotos are Canon L series, for the ease of getting close and distant shots in a hurry from a car without working to cameras and big prime telephotos i was considering the Sigma 150-600 sports Telezoom. Has anybody here used or own this lens and are there any serious problems or downfalls? my biggest concern is lack of sharpness. Mark Baynes Posted January 4, 2015 Share Posted January 4, 2015 Paul, I shared your concerns re Sigma glass before I purchased the 150-500 and optically it is as good as any Canon glass I have used over the last 20 years and now intend to purchase the 150-600. The only real difference in my opinion is the build quality (reflected in the significantly lower price) and of course you do not get all the benefits of having Canon glass on a camera. I was considering trading in the 150-500 for the 150-600 but having seen the size of the 150-600 (big!) i intend to keep both. regards Mark Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ed Rooney Posted January 4, 2015 Share Posted January 4, 2015 Not much to be found on that long zoom, Paul. Is that a bad sign, or is it just a new lens? I'm wondering how many Canon bodies you'll be bring with you? Can I assume you already have a few long primes? That lens is compact but it's not fast. An interesting problem. The somewhat shorter, less expensive Sigmas I own and have owned have all been solid of build and sharp. Can you rent one for a test? Good luck. Paul Mayall Posted January 4, 2015 Author Share Posted January 4, 2015 Ed, yes renting would be a good way to find out, i will see if it is possible, also as you pointed out it is not a fast lens, also a consideration, i was shooting wildlife in the Kruger a few years ago with a 300 2.8 and 600 F/4 on 2 body's and it was a bit of a pain switching within a confined space of a motor car, hence the idea of a big zoom making it a little easier, of course if money was not a problem i would purchase the new Canon 200-400 L, but the cost for such a lens is somewhat insane. I once interviewed John Dominis, the Life Magazine photographer. I asked him for tips about shooting in Africa, where he did a famous year-long assignment. "Bring a lot of paperbacks," he said.
