Experienced Alamy photographers with '0' images to their name - a comment.

Alamy

Recommended Posts

Many of you are asking why there appears to be people who are very experienced Alamy contributors posting on the forum with '0' images next to their name.

In short, we're going to see how this pans out. We won't be stopping people with 0 images posting as we want the forum to be a place where brand new members can ask questions.

It remains to be seen whether or not the forum community in general takes a 'view' on those experienced Alamy photographers that 'game' the system to post without having their portfolio linked. If this does become a problem, we can look at the possibility of banning the members that do this as really, it's not in keeping with the spirit of the new forum.

Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. I'll ask for my account to be closed. I do not want to go against the spirit of the forum. And also the unused account set up for Creative which I have been using.

I'd also add that there are literally hundreds of members who have a big fat zero next to the number of their posts that they have made.

It would make more sense to me to give all members a tick box in the settings to either show portfolio content or not.

Then we all would have the choice and would not need to "game the system".

Why not let a member choose one pseudo to link to?

Or maybe better: a lightbox.

Not sure what the very good reasons are for wanting to avoid your pictures being seen by others - but lets not start having one rule for one and another for another - it is not a 'game' to be played by teenagers - I'm pretty sure that there are a few of my images that I'd rather not be judged by.

Incidentally if I want to look at your 'portfolio' do you really think that I would not be able to do so ? !!!!

I can understand that there may be reasons why some people may not want their images linked to their names. But I am troubled as to why? The obvious question to me is: Why upload such images in the first place if they are problematic? I'm not suggesting that it makes anybody an underworld figure, it's just that I don't really understand the reasons.

Happy to be convinced otherwise.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any reasons for someone not wanting to have their photos linked to their forum identity either, but that's no reason for me to object to the practise. If that's what some prefer, why not? It troubles me not in the slightest, I have enough in my own life to keep me interested without worrying about why others do or don't do stuff.

Seriously, I see no harm in the practise, as I see no harm in anonymous posters, or contributors who use only a pseudonym instead of their real name.

There is nothing wrong with the images they have uploaded onto Alamy.  Its the fact that other people can see what images they are uploading.

If someone is/has said that they are making loads of money from their pictures, then others could look at their images, and follow with a similar offering.

I just made my first forum post and notice I have a 0 for images. I don't think I did anything to set this? If clicked it does go through to my 3000 odd images. So maybe others are inadvertently showing this 0?

edit .. looks like they are showing now, so maybe just a short delay after first starting to use the forum.

As a poster, I like the fact that I can see what someone who is "giving me advice" has in their photo arsenal.

It makes it easy for me to judge the relevancy of their comments. Or to discount them equally.

I would be happier if Alamy just stopped non registered posters from accessing this forum and left it to contributors only rather than using the forum as a cheap SEO tool.

I was surprised by the "new" Forum when all images that I have on Alamy (I currently have a main group and a second group, pseudo) were linked under my name?

I use the second group or pseudo to experiment with and the main group, under my own name, is only what I consider to be first line material. I had been

trying to get around to dropping a note to Alamy about this but this post appeared and I decided to respond on the Forum instead.

It is obvious that I would prefer that just my main group be linked to my forum posts,

which is also under my name. It is not an urgent matter, but I would appreciate a response from Alamy on this.

I quite like the fact that all my images can be seen together, but I can understand why others would feel differently. An option to direct the link to one pseudo would be a good idea. I do have one pseudo that contains images marked for deletion, which includes many inferior versions of images that I would rather leave hidden.
